Fighting Multidrug Resistance with Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils and Their Components

Fighting Multidrug Resistance with Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils and their Components offers scientists a single source aimed at fighting specific multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoans, viruses and fungi using natural products. This essential reference discusses herbal extracts and essential oils used or under investigation to treat MDR infections, as well as those containing antimicrobial activity that could be of potential interest in future studies against MDR microorganisms. The need to combat multidrug-resistant microorganisms is an urgent one and this book provides important coverage of mechanism of action, the advantages and disadvantages of using her...

Leishmania Parasites

Leishmania parasites are a group of pathogens responsible for diseases known as leishmaniases. These pathologies affect predominantly the poorest people, mainly in tropical countries, exerting a high impact on mortality and morbidity rates. The absence of a vaccine and the reduced drug arsenal, associated with the diversity in the clinical presentation and hosts, highlight the complexity of the disease and its position as a worldwide public health problem. This book addresses different aspects related to leishmaniases, such as epidemiology, immunopathology, and the challenges of disease in humans and domestic animals. The information presented contributes to a better understanding of the Leishmania parasites and different clinical forms produced by infection, as well as their distribution around the world and their impacts on public health.

Fighting Multidrug Resistance with Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils and Their Components

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by parasites belonging to the Leishmania genus. This disease has a prevalence that exceeds 12 million, and approximately 350 million individuals are currently residing in areas at risk for contracting the infection. The standard drugs employed in the treatment pose serious side effects for patients. Moreover, some reports suggested that the Leishmania species present different degrees of resistance to conventional drugs, which justifies the ongoing search for novel leishmanicidal molecules. In only a few decades, the available research pertaining to plant-derived leishmanicidal compounds has increased considerably; however, the majority of bioguided studies have only shown antileishmanial activity in vitro, thus ignoring the potential in vivo effects of different classes of plant-derived compounds on Leishmania species. This chapter will discuss the main findings of works published from 2002 to 2012 on purified plant compounds and their leishmanicidal effects in vivo.

Recent Advances in Biopolymers

This book contains 10 Chapters divided into three Sections. Section A covers synthesis of biopolymers. Lignocellulosic feedstock contains cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which are used for synthesis of biopolymers. Polymer-coated noble metal nanoparticles are used in nanobiomedicine and fundamental biomaterials. Section B describes applications of biopolymers in biomedical, antimicrobial, industrial, nanotechnology, laser-based thin films, and regenerative medicines. Section C is dedicated for advancement and engineering in biopolymers for personal protective garments, equipments, membrane separation processes, purifications, and new generation of high-performance biomaterials. A new numerical-cum-graphical method called TI2BioP (Topological Indices to BioPolymers) has been developed to estimate topological indices (TIs) from two-dimensional (2D) graphical approaches for the natural biopolymers DNA, RNA, and proteins.
