This is a work of excavation of the modern history of Turkey, with the Kurdish question at its center, unearthed and exposed in Çandar’s captivating narrative. The Kurdish question is perceived as a mortal threat for the survival of Turkey. The author weaves a fascinating account of the encounter between Turkey and the Kurds in historical perspective with special emphasis on failed peace processes. Providing a unique historical reco...
PER WORD Ancestors said, “Beginning is half done.” he said. We started writing this book in 2017. It took four years to complete the other half. Because the process being explained was difficult. Of course, it would not be easy to turn it into a book. Peyami Safa, “Easy life is short.” he said. It doesn't matter if it's late or difficult, as long as it lasts a long time. The people of Kuşulu had experienced and realized a first in the history of Turkish and world democracy. The fight was tough but ended in victory. The value of a victory is directly proportional to its difficulty. It was a difficult and necessary task to write down this victory so that it would survive for many more...
The fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Turkey covers Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey through a time span of more than six centuries. It presents the basic characteristics of the two periods and traces the developments from an empire to a state-nation, from tradition to modernity, from a sultanate to a republic, and from modest country to a country that is already a regional power and further aspiring becoming a country to be reckoned with. This is done through a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Turkey.
International and domestic actors questioning freedom of the press in Turkey do not adopt a comprehensive approach, instead confining the issue to the more attractive and popular sphere of daily political debates. The biggest obstacles before freedom of the press in Turkey, however, do not stem from the political will but from nonpolitical power circles. The issue is exacerbated by the fact that violations of press freedom, caused by power instruments outside of politics, are cynical and difficult to resist in nature. This book aims to discuss the freedom of the press in Turkey within a new context and propose an alternative to the instrumental yet widespread attitude adopted solely for poli...
The Kurdish Movement in Turkey’s growing alliance with Islam One of the fault lines of Turkish politics traditionally has been the divide between religious and secular movements. However, as Zeki Sarigil argues, the secular Kurdish movement in Turkey has increasingly become aligned with Islam. As a result, Islam has become part of the movement’s political discourse, strategies and actions. Ethnic Boundaries in Turkish Politics traces the evolving relations between the leftist, secular Kurdish movement and Islam, from an apathetic and/or antagonistic attitude in the 1970s and 1980s to an increasingly Islam-friendly approach in the 1990s to an attitude of accommodation and the rise of Kurd...
