This new volume of Reading Swift assembles 26 lectures delivered at the Seventh Münster Symposium on Jonathan Swift in June 2017, testifying to an extraordinary spectrum of research interests in the Dean of St Patrick's, Dublin, and his works. Reading Swift follows the tried and tested format of its predecessors, grouping the essays in eight sections: biographical problems; bibliographical and canonical studies; political and religious as well as philosophical, economic, and social issues; poetry; Gulliver's Travels; and reception studies. The élan vital, which has been such a distinctive feature of Swift scholar-ship in the past thirty-five years, is continuing unabated.

This book offers an accessible single-volume introduction to a wider range of Swift's writing than is usually covered in such treatments of him. Primarily a work of biographically-inflected literary criticism, it draws on insights furnished by feminist and postcolonial literary theories when those are relevant. Commencing with an account of the domestic and foreign contexts in which Swift's life was rooted, the book provides a chronological account of that life. His writing is examined chronologically, progressing through his early writing, early religious satire, English political and personal writings and the Irish phase of his life and writing. Textual chapters are devoted to Swift's poetic achievement; and to "Gulliver's Travels." Additionally, in the chapter on Swift's Irish religious and political writings, the missing religious dimension of "Gulliver's Travels" is considered as part of an analysis of Swift's religious vocation. -- From publisher's description.

Jonathan Swift and the Eighteenth-Century Book
Jonathan Swift lived through a period of turbulence and innovation in the evolution of the book. His publications, perhaps more than those of any other single author, illustrate the range of developments that transformed print culture during the early Enlightenment. Swift was a prolific author and a frequent visitor at the printing house, and he wrote as critic and satirist about the nature of text. The shifting moods of irony, complicity and indignation that characterise his dealings with the book trade add a layer of complexity to the bibliographic record of his published works. The essays collected here offer the first comprehensive, integrated survey of that record. They shed new light on the politics of the eighteenth-century book trade, on Swift's innovations as a maker of books, on the habits and opinions revealed by his commentary on printed texts and on the re-shaping of the Swiftian book after his death.
