Baltic Cities

A revamped and expanded version of Bradt's Baltic Capitals, this guide recognises a shift in the nature of travel in the region. No longer limited to a Baltics' itinerary covering Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, the guide incorporates the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the Baltic coast from Klaipeda to Liepaja, and inland cities of Kaunas and Tartu.Whereas the Baltic states reflect western European influence, Kaliningrad - an offshoot of Russia - is very different: the Cyrillic alphabet remains and tourists can still see a statue of Lenin, or walk along a Revolution Road. The perfect companion, Baltic Cities details each city's historic sights, from museums to churches, together with scenic walking tours and essential details of where to eat and stay.

Started in 1998 by two former Stanford University students working out of a garage in California, Google was recently ranked as the world's most loved brand. Against the odds, Google.com survived the dotcom crash, has become the search engine of choice for millions of companies and Internet users, and raised US1.67 billion from its public listing in 2004 - one of the most eagerly anticipated IPOs in modern business history. What is it about Google that makes many of us love it when it is no more than a computer programme? The answer lies in the Google brand, which is somehow deeper, has more humour and has more self-awareness than many other brands can manage. The Google brand feels more authentic because it is more like a person than just a logo. In this book, Neil Taylor explores the surprising success of Google, the people behind it, and the crucial role which the Google brand has played.

"From 1998 to 2005 Neil Drabble photographed an American teenager, Roy, as he grew from adolescence to early manhood. On one level this extensive body of work can be viewed as a fascinating document of an always-compelling transition. Closer scrutiny reveals further nuances; a collaboration, a partnership, a personal portrait and at the same time a universal picture of adolescence. Drabble chose not to depict significant events that might appear in a family album nor definitive moments associated with documentary photography. Instead, these photographs concentrate on the listless, off-scene periods, the 'in between moments' of everyday life. This focus on the marginal passages of disregarded time situates the viewer at the heart of adolescence, defined as the period between childhood and adulthood, suspended between longing (for the deferred promise of adulthood) and regret (for the loss of childhood as refuge). By photographing the same person repeatedly and intimately over their formative years, a sense of mirroring began to emerge, reawakening something of the artist's own adolescent self, blurring the line between portrait and self-portrait"--Provided by publisher.
