Where Have All the Horses Gone?
A century ago, horses were ubiquitous in America. They plowed the fields, transported people and goods within and between cities and herded livestock. About a million of them were shipped overseas to serve in World War I. Equine related industries employed vast numbers of stable workers, farriers, wainwrights, harness makers and teamsters. Cities were ringed with fodder-producing farmland, and five-story stables occupied prime real estate in Manhattan. Then, in just a few decades, the horses vanished in a wave of emerging technologies. Those technologies fostered unprecedented economic growth, and with it a culture of recreation and leisure that opened a new place for the horse as an athletic teammate and social companion.

From Temple to Tent
The principal interest of the text on the tabernacle tent, Exodus 24:15 - Numbers 10:28, is Israelite worship-cultic place, the cultic people, and laws for the regulation of cultic life. The method followed is description of the biblical text and collation of the evidence as would a classicist go about classifying an ancient Greek Vase. The findings reveal a virtual world of Israelite cult. The transportable tabernacle tent with its courtyard and altar resembles a temple in its complexity. Through words the reader is invited into the atmosphere of the tabernacle tent where all the senses are evoked. The beautifully embellished fore-room of the tent illuminated by the light of the lamp-stand is seen, the waft of incense smelt, the atmosphere of fear or attraction that emanates from the epicentre of holiness felt. The tabernacle tent is constructed of words, not of stones. It is indestructible and does not succumb to the vagaries of time, as pristine today as it was over 2,500 years ago when it was first created.
Japanese Castles 1540–1640
The landscape of 16thand 17th-century Japan was dominated by the graceful and imposing castles constructed by the powerful 'daimyo' of the period. In this the most turbulent era in Japanese history, these militarily sophisticated structures provided strongholds for the consolidation and control of territory, and inevitably they became the focus for many of the great sieges of Japanese history: Nagashino (1575), Kitanosho (1583), Odawara (1590), Fushimi (1600), Osaka (1615) and Hara (1638), the last of the battles that brought an end to a period of intense civil war. This title traces their development from the earliest timber stockades to the immense structures that dominated the great centres of Osaka and Edo.
