Arabic Printing for the Christians in Ottoman Lands
Arabic printing began in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Levant through the association of the scholar and printer Antim the Iberian, later a metropolitan of Wallachia, and Athanasios III Dabbās, twice patriarch of Antioch, when the latter, as metropolitan of Aleppo, was sojourning in Bucharest. This partnership resulted in the first Greek and Arabic editions of the Book of the Divine Liturgies (Snagov, 1701) and the Horologion (Bucharest, 1702). Als König Karl XII. von Schweden Gast der Rumänen war
Nach der verlorenen Schlacht von Poltawa am 27. Juni 1709 im Großen Nordischen Krieg zwischen Russland und Schweden musste der schwedische König Karl XII. mit den Resten seiner Armee Schutz im Osmanischen Reich suchen. Man erlaubte ihm, neben den Mauern der moldauischen Festung Bender eine eigene Stadt aufzubauen, die für über fünf Jahre praktisch die neue Hauptstadt Schwedens wurde und von wo alle wichtigen Entscheidungen für dieses Reich getroffen wurden. Mit Blick auf aufgedeckte Verschwörungen, ihn auf dem Heimweg abzufangen und an seine Feinde auszuliefern, war der König nur bereit, mit einer ausreichenden Eskorte abzureisen, was wiederum der Zar als Kriegserklärung angesehen hätte. Das alles führte zum ungewöhnlichsten Ereignis der Exilzeit und ist in die Weltgeschichte unter dem Namen Kalabalik eingegangen: Angegriffen von zigtausend Türken und Tataren entschied sich der König nicht, wie jeder andere es getan hätte, sich zu ergeben, sondern seine Stadt und sein Heim mit nur einer Handvoll Getreuer in einem aussichtslosen Kampf zu verteidigen. Jede Angabe im Buch stammt aus Chroniken der Zeit und aus Berichten von Augenzeugen und nichts ist erfunden.
