Cold War Genres explores post-independence Hindi literature, framing it within the sociopolitical backdrop of Nehruvian India during the early Cold War. The book underscores the pivotal role of Hindi's claims to be a national language following independence, which fostered a unique moment of literary innovation. Central to its narrative is the work of Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, a pivotal figure in modern South Asian literature. Using Muktibodh's poetry, criticism, and fiction as a primary example, the book shows how literary form shapes a response to the internal contradictions of 1950s India, one that must be read in light of both the antinomies of Hindi literature and North India as well as the aesthetic debates and emerging ideas of global space during this time. Cold War Genres therefore functions as a lens to evaluate questions of genre and form shared by a range of literary cultures in the mid-twentieth-century decolonizing world. This book focuses on genealogies of religious authority in South Asia, examining the figure of the guru in narrative texts, polemical tracts, hagiographies, histories, in contemporary devotional communities, New Age spiritual movements and global guru organizations. Experts in the field present reflections on historically specific contexts in which a guru comes into being, becomes part of a community, is venerated, challenged or repudiated, generates a new canon, remains unique with no clear succession or establishes a succession in which charisma is routinized. The guru emerges and is sustained and routinized from the nexus of guruship, narratives, performances and community. The contributors to the book examine this nexus at specific historical moments with all their elements of change and contingency. The book will be of interest to scholars in the field of South Asian studies, the study of religions and cultural studies.
This book is an attempt to approach Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary rhetoric as a site of perpetual motion; of constant shifts and transformations that point towards instances of conscious refashioning in one’s own politics. Throughout his life Bhagat Singh made use of multiple political ideologies for conceptualizing revolution ranging from spiritual nationalism, Gandhism, socialism, Marxism and anarchism. At some points he can also be seen merging some of the more disparate ideologies for the progression of the revolutionary cause. This book explores the changing revolutionary thought of Bhagat Singh, made explicit through his personal and political writings from the period of 1923-1931. The aforementioned shifts in his politics are demarcated through a close reading of select texts from this time period to argue for a fundamental reframing in the way we approach Bhagat Singh’s politics.
