Perspectives on Work, Home, and Identity From Artisans in Telangana
Providing an ethnographic account of the everyday life of a household of artisans in the Telangana state of southern India, Chandan Bose engages with craft practice beyond the material (in this case, the region's characteristic murals, narrative cloth scrolls, and ritual masks and figurines). In situating the voice of the artisans themselves as the central focus of study, simultaneous and juxtaposing histories of craft practice emerge, through which artisans assemble narratives about work, home, and identity through multiple lenses. These perspectives include: the language artisans use to articulate their experience of materials, materiality, and the physical process of making; the shared and collective memory of practitioners through which they recount the genealogy of the practice; the everyday life of the household and its kinship practices, given the integration of the studio-space and the home-space; the negotiations between practitioners and the nation-state over matters of patronage; and the capacities of artisans to both conform to and affect the practices of the neo-liberal market.
Religious Authority in South Asia
This book focuses on genealogies of religious authority in South Asia, examining the figure of the guru in narrative texts, polemical tracts, hagiographies, histories, in contemporary devotional communities, New Age spiritual movements and global guru organizations. Experts in the field present reflections on historically specific contexts in which a guru comes into being, becomes part of a community, is venerated, challenged or repudiated, generates a new canon, remains unique with no clear succession or establishes a succession in which charisma is routinized. The guru emerges and is sustained and routinized from the nexus of guruship, narratives, performances and community. The contributors to the book examine this nexus at specific historical moments with all their elements of change and contingency. The book will be of interest to scholars in the field of South Asian studies, the study of religions and cultural studies.
Culture, Context and Aging of Older Indians
This book discusses the intersections between culture, context, and aging. It adopts a socio-cultural lens and highlights emotional, social, and psychological issues of the older adults in urban India. This book is an attempt to approach Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary rhetoric as a site of perpetual motion; of constant shifts and transformations that point towards instances of conscious refashioning in one’s own politics. Throughout his life Bhagat Singh made use of multiple political ideologies for conceptualizing revolution ranging from spiritual nationalism, Gandhism, socialism, Marxism and anarchism. At some points he can also be seen merging some of the more disparate ideologies for the progression of the revolutionary cause. This book explores the changing revolutionary thought of Bhagat Singh, made explicit through his personal and political writings from the period of 1923-1931. The aforementioned shifts in his politics are demarcated through a close reading of select texts from this time period to argue for a fundamental reframing in the way we approach Bhagat Singh’s politics.
