Virginia Woolf's only play-a hilarious farce taken from the life of her great-aunt, Julia Margaret Cameron, the famous Victorian photographer. It was first performed at Vanessa Bell's London studio in 1935 as one of Bloomsbury's theatrical evenings and later, in New York, in a star-studded French production. Edited and with a Preface by Lucio P. Ruotolo; drawings by Edward Gorey.

Why Science Is Sexist

Science changes the world because the creation of knowledge opens up new pathways for us to explore new ways of doing things, and new questions to ask. My optimism lies in the fact that I think that the answer to why science is sexist does all of these things. In this eye-opening BWB Text, Nicola Gaston, President of the New Zealand Association of Scientists, reveals the ways in which the discipline of science is sexist. From the under-representation of women to the argument that mental capabilities are gendered, Gaston demonstrates the extent of our unconscious bias against female scientists, and warns of its damaging consequences for science and for society. In asking what can be done to combat this bias, she calls for us to rethink not just our attitudes towards gender, but also towards scientific knowledge and inquiry.

Recycling Madrid

"This book presents unusual projects, techniques and places that seek to materialize a vision of the contemporary city with which to recycle established beliefs about architecture and the role of the architect. Madrid appears as a metaphor of the world. It is a privileged space in which to test new ways of understanding the limits between public and private, natural and artificial, identity and hybridization."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Urban Revolution

Originally published in 1970, The Urban Revolution marked Henri Lefebvre’s first sustained critique of urban society, a work in which he pioneered the use of semiotic, structuralist, and poststructuralist methodologies in analyzing the development of the urban environment. Although it is widely considered a foundational book in contemporary thinking about the city, The Urban Revolution has never been translated into English—until now. This first English edition, deftly translated by Robert Bononno, makes available to a broad audience Lefebvre’s sophisticated insights into the urban dimensions of modern life.Lefebvre begins with the premise that the total urbanization of society is an i...

The book presents research works developed within the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD) by senior and young researchers that participated in the Intensive Research Program “Advances in the anthropological theory of the didactic and their consequences in curricula and teacher education” held at the Centre de Recerca Matematica (CRM) in Barcelona. It is organized in three axes of current research on the ATD: teacher education and the professionalization of teaching; the curriculum problem in the historical transition from the classical paradigm of visiting works to the emerging didactic paradigm of questioning the world; and research in didactics at the university level.

It is increasingly evident that the conventional scientific approach to economic processes and related sustainability issues is seriously flawed. No economist predicted the current planetary crisis even though the world has now undergone five severe recessions primed by dramatic increases in the price of oil. This book presents the results of more than twenty years of work aimed at developing an alternative method of analysis of the economic process and related sustainability issues: it is possible to perform an integrated and comprehensive analysis of the sustainability of socio-economic systems using indicators and variables that have been so far ignored by conventional economists. The boo...

The Palacio de Congresos de Catalunya-the Catalan Conference Center-is one of Carlos Ferrater's most recent works, created in collaboration with Jose M. Cartana. This monograph on the buidling is an exhaustive analysis of the construction process, from the planning phase to its actual completion. As such, it will be a valuable book for those involved in the design of public buildings, as Ferrater is at the forefront of contemporary architecture. The building itself is divided into three sections, separated from each other by two interior streets that provide natural light for the rooms. The main entrance has a large vestibule and a hall with an amphitheater for 2,500 conference-goers. The central section can be subdivided into a multitude of smaller rooms and is reserved for more varied uses. The third and smallest section houses the cafeteria, offices, and other ancillary spaces.
