This collection of papers on Middle English provides an overview of current research dealing with manuscripts, texts and linguistic forms from a range of perspectives. The papers are organized under four main headings: The transmission of Middle English texts, Syntax and morphology, Genre and discourse and Textual afterlives.
Investigating West Germanic Languages
This volume celebrates Robert B. Howell's wide-ranging contribution as a scholar, mentor, collaborator, and colleague in the field of Germanic linguistics. In addition to investigating present-day or past varieties of Afrikaans, Dutch, English, Flemish, German, and Pennsylvania Dutch, each of the thirteen contributions in this volume explores one or more of the topics found in Howell’s work: (1) Linguistic structure and change (Page, Sundquist, Fagan, De Vaan); (2) Migration, contact, and change (Fertig, Louden, Roberge); (3) Vernacular sources and change (Auer & Gordon, Hendriks, Van der Wal); (4) Historical sociolinguistics: past, present, and future (Van Bree, Crombez, Vandenbussche & Vosters, Lauersdorf & Salmons).
Language Change, Writing and Textual Interference in Post-conquest Old English Manuscripts
This book analyses one of the few textual sources from twelfth-century England written in the vernacular: a manuscript now in Cambridge, University Library, bearing the shelfmark li. 1.33. It contains forty-two Old English texts, mostly saints' lives composed by lfric, abbot of Eynsham (c.950-c.1010). Both palaeo-graphical and linguistic evidence is used to establish the number of scribes and the possible origin of the various manuscript parts. A detailed examination of additions and alterations to the central part as well as a discussion of significant changes to the rest of the manuscript demonstrates language change and interest from the late twelfth century until today. The book includes the first study of three larger marginal passages, one in Middle English and two in Old French. Twelve plates taken from the manuscript and one from a related manuscript provide rich illustrations.

Medievalism in Technology Old and New
Medievalism examined in a variety of genres, from fairy tales to today's computer games. As medievalism is refracted through new media, it is often radically transformed. Yet it inevitably retains at least some common denominators with more traditional responses to the middle ages. This latest volume of Studies inMedievalism explores this phenomenon with a special section on computer games, examining digital echoes of the medieval past in subjects ranging from the sovereign ethics of empire in Star Wars to gender identity in on-line role playing. Medievalism in more conventional venues is also addressed, ranging from early French fairy tales to nineteenth-century neo-Byzantine murals. Great innovation and extraordinary continuity are thus juxtaposed not only within each article but also across the volume as a whole, in yet further testimony to the exceptional flexibility and enduring relevance of medievalism.
