Rural-Urban Linkages and Sustainable Development
This volume picks up from where a previously edited title in this book series - Rural-Urban Linkages and Sustainable Development in Africa (2018) left off, by presenting nine new case studies from various parts of the African continent. These cases illustrate the complex and multifaceted interactions between cities and rural areas, through the flow of resources, people, capital, information, and goods which directly impact the sustainable development of these concerned areas. Contributions are drawn from young faculty and graduates from the three master’s programmes in Sustainable Urban Development, Sustainable Integrated Rural Development and Mining and Mineral Resources, coordinated by the eight partner African universities who make up the Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) initiative. The volume is part of the ESDA book series that serves primarily as undergraduate and graduate instruction materials for courses on sustainable development in Africa. It also aims to inform policy initiatives on development issues on the continent.

Land Politics
Land Politics examines the struggle to control land in Africa through the lens of land titling in Zambia and Senegal. Contrary to standard wisdom portraying titling as an inevitable product of economic development, Lauren Honig traces its distinctly political logic and shows how informality is maintained by local actors. The book's analysis focuses on chiefs, customary institutions, and citizens, revealing that the strength of these institutions and an individual's position within them impact the expansion of state authority over land rights. Honig explores common subnational patterns within the two very different countries to highlight the important effects of local institutions, not the state's capacity or priorities alone, on state building outcomes. Drawing on evidence from national land titling records, qualitative case studies, interviews, and surveys, this book contributes new insights into the persistence of institutional legacies and the political determinants of property rights.
Disenchanted Modernities
Mega-Infrastructure Projects (MIPs) represent a central element of globalized development. MIPs like the Chinese driven `Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI) include large-scale agrarian, road, rail, port and energy networks. They are complex ventures involving international capital and multiple stakeholders. Disenchanted Modernities presents 16 case studies showing that the promise of a sustainable modern development by MIPs leave many local users disenchanted: They don't profit form the MIPs but lose access to their resources often held in common. The book describes the strategies of states and companies as well as local responses to MIPs in Asia, Africa, Americas and Europe.
Sustainability Challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa II
The aim of this two-volume book series is to highlight some of the most pervasive sustainability challenges that Sub-Saharan Africa faces. The two volumes contain 20 chapters that illustrate very diverse sustainability challenges throughout the continent, adopting interdisciplinary and problem-oriented research approaches, and methods from the natural and the social sciences. The very diverse case study chapters are put into perspective with chapters that introduce key sustainability challenges using a regional focus. Through this multi-scale and interdisciplinary approach the two volumes provide an authoritative source about the major sustainability challenges in the continent, and how to mobilise such perspectives to develop appropriate solutions. The two volumes have a uniquely broad focus that fills a major gap in the emerging Sustainability Science scholarship. Parts I-II highlight specific case studies on major sustainability challenges from Eastern and Southern Africa. Part III synthesizes the main lessons learnt from the chapters in the two edited volumes.
Normann Carr
Norman Carr (1912-1997) devoted his life to the conservation of wildlife and their habitat. He saw that this could only be achieved with the involvement and support of the local people who should benefit from it. He was the founder of game viewing safaris in Zambia. In the 1950s he enabled the establishment of a game reserve which became the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park and with Chief Nsefu he established the first camp for tourists within it. He was also influential in the development of the Kafue National Park. Carr skilfully manipulated central and local bureaucracies before and after Zambia's Independence, established a safari company which outlived him and now runs five lodges in the Luangwa Valley, pioneered walking safaris, wrote several books and raised two lion cubs which were successfully returned to the wild.
Tackling Sustainable Development in Africa and Asia
This book provides a platform for young scholars in Africa and Asia, the Next Generation Researchers (NGRs), to publish their research outputs and express their perspectives on varying sustainable development challenges. This book forms part of a book series for the Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) initiative administered by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study for Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in partnership with 8 leading African universities. The sustainability perspectives expressed by young people - previously a silent voice in the global sustainable development agenda, are valuable in informing policy debates, particularly, in developing countries. Furthermore, the multidisciplinary perspectives presented in this book will be utilised to inform instructional material for ESDA’s three Master’s programmes in Sustainable Urban Development (SUD), Sustainable Integrated Rural Development in Africa (SIRDA) and Mining and Mineral Resources (MMR), as well as policy input to key developmental issues in Africa.
