Las formas como las personas, en una sociedad determinada, coordinan esfuerzos e intereses y cooperan en busca de beneficios colectivos son indispensables para construir estados democráticos, comunidades políticas. Es en estas donde ocurre el nosotros y donde se hace manifiesto lo común. En las sociedades signadas por las guerras u otros fenómenos traumáticos son muchas las dificultades para consolidar esas formas. En el tiempo se van urdiendo entre las personas obstáculos que se actualizan, transmiten a lo largo de generaciones, en todo caso se repiten, reverberan. Como resultado, las condiciones de posibilidad para lo común son pocas; los discursos de enemistad entre miembros de la comunidad abundan; se hacen más populares los ideales individuales y una disposición inmunitaria en contra del otro, visto como un síntoma o como parte una enfermedad; se consolidan relaciones horizontales para nada extrañas en muchos contextos más pacíficos, se hacen extrañas en los lugares donde la guerra fue la cotidianidad; a menudo las propuestas de cambios de sectores ideológicos diversos se juzgan como torpes, poco técnicas o imposibles.
