Roè è un venditore di pensieri, quelli con cui cerca di soddisfare le richieste di chi vorrebbe conoscere qualcosa del proprio futuro o avere consigli per cambiare la propria vita. Per un breve tempo esercita il mestiere in fiere e mercati di piccole città della Romagna, sino al momento in cui, grazie a un’eredità, inizia a vendere libri usati, antichi e moderni. Ma sono solo passaggi verso l’ultima e più definitiva attività di scrittore di romanzi. I rapporti e le parole scambiate con le persone con cui è stato a contatto, per quanto superficiali, gli permettono di inventare una personale scrittura che diventa una sorta di palinsesto sul quale costruire le storie che scrive. Nel corso della sua evoluzione intellettuale e lavorativa, conosce personaggi dalla personalità originale e spesso anticonformista, caratteristiche pensioni per studenti, aspiranti bohémiens, ma anche donne con le quali sembra poter iniziare rapporti sentimentali che non arrivano a concretizzarsi.
