Paul Hart has photographed the Fens for over ten years. His narrative examines the complex interrelation between humanity and nature and raises important questions about human-altered topography and our occupation and stewardship of this land. By focusing on the often-overlooked elements in familiar vistas Hart s aesthetics carry a documentary sensibility that allows the landscapes to define themselves. He works solely with the analogue process employing traditional darkroom practice to convey something of the soulful in a landscape that is rarely considered of aesthetic merit.
Restoration as Fabrication of Origins
The aim of this publication is to clarify the relationships between material restoration and politics in Italian Renaissance art. The focus of this research is on the question of origin as a foothold for political, patrimonial, and cultural identity. These claims were enacted within a system which, rather than restoring the initial forms and meanings of existing objects, remodeled the past according to new identity requirements: spaces were reorganized, and works of art invested with new meanings. Their material and aesthetic reality was thus transformed and redefined. The aim is therefore to analyze the potential physical modifications of these artefacts in light of their symbolic recoding. Pneumopteria
This publication is devoted to an extensive description of the pneumopteria which are also referred to as cloud whales or cloud sponges, and occasionally, in scientific language, as pneumospongia. Often, in older treatises, they have been termed celestial leviathans. These gigantic, cloud-like creatures, which seemed to float in the air without movement or stimulation, could reach several hundred meters in size. In all likelihood, they are extinct today. The species was, however, frequently observed in historical times and has been described by numerous cultures and in many different contexts. With his research findings, Roland Boden provides the first thorough introduction to the nature, appearance, and behavior of the pneumopteria and surveys the history of their exploration and description. In his treatise, defined as fictional research, Boden uses quotations, photographs, reproductions, reconstructive drawings, and computer-generated images, combining real scientific and historical facts with completely fictitious elements to create a parallel reality that cleverly and artistically questions contemporary perceptual processes.
Lee Bul
The South Korean artist Lee Bul finished her studies in sculpture in Seoul in 1987, a time when, following a period of dictatorship and military rule, democratic reforms began opening up the economically emergent country, and visions of the future were painted both in the most glowing and the most sombre colours. As a performance artist, Lee Bul flew in the face of the artistic conventions of her native land, at first conceiving strongly physical or even guerilla-like actions - for example, appearing unexpectedly in public wearing monstrous soft-fabric forms sprouting tentacular appendages - as she searched for a way to express not just her own states of mind, but those of society as well. Breaking new ground as the first transdisciplinary reader in this field, Video Theories is a resource that will form the basis for further research and teaching. While theories of video have not yet formed an academic discipline comparable to the more canonized theories of photography, film, and television, the reader offers a major step toward bridging this “video gap” in media theory, which is remarkable considering today's omnipresence of the medium through online video portals and social media.
