The Return to Firm Investment in Human Capital

The Return to Firm Investment in Human Capital

In this paper the authors estimate the rate of return to firm investments in human capital in the form of formal job training. They use a panel of large firms with unusually detailed information on the duration of training, the direct costs of training, and several firm characteristics such as their output, workforce characteristics, and capital stock. Their estimates of the return to training vary substantially across firms. On average it is -7 percent for firms not providing training and 24 percent for those providing training. Formal job training is a good investment for many firms and the economy, possibly yielding higher returns than either investments in physical capital or investments in schooling. In spite of this, observed amounts of formal training are small.

Matre's Dance

First made famous by Evelyn Glennie, Matre’s Dance (1991/94) is now a standard in the repertoire for piano and percussion. The title refers to a dance performed by a group of fanatics in one of Frank Herbert’s Dune books. The dance was non-repeating and exhausting for the dancer, who often collapsed or died before completing the extremely long, complex routine. Matre’s Dance is highly energetic and maintains relentless rhythmic tension courtesy of unpredictable accents and syncopation.

Jettatura

A great test for advanced pianists, Jettatura (1999) is an uncomplicated moto perpetuo, and another example of Psathas’s gift for creating high-energy, compelling works. Requiring heavy and impassioned fingering, Jettatura is shot through with defiance and aggression. The left hand hammers a stream of ostinatos while the right hand flies almost incautiously over the keys, stretching to the piano’s upper register.

Drum Dances

Commissioned by renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, Psathas’ Drum Dances (1993) is a standard for drum kit and piano repertoire. Each of the four movements in this work were stimulated by a certain rhythmic interaction possible between two performers. The performers gradually transition from battling for superiority to working together throughout the work as they navigate material ranging from from a loosely-written stately dance to very tight and syncopated rhythmic interaction.

One Study One Summary

Psathas’s One Study One Summary (2005) is a cutting-edge work for marimba, with junk percussion & digital audio, that is a favourite among virtuosic solo percussionists. As the title suggests, it is cast in two movements, and while the work exhibits the ‘busy’ motoric textures for which Psathas is well-known, reflective, atmospheric textures predominate throughout. The electronic sounds and beats in the digital audio part provide an evocative palette for the live percussionist to interact with. Please note that the digital audio files are not provided with this version of the score from GooglePlay. You may download the files here: https://43.dpdcart.com/product/110559
