The present-day Parish of Greatham lies in the county of Hampshire, on either side of the old Farnham (Surrey) to Petersfield Turnpike. The 'Domesday Book' of 1086 recorded Greatham as being 'Terra Regis', a Latin term meaning 'Land of the King', indicating that this was once a Royal manor belonging to William the Conqueror himself. In later years, the manor passed through many families by marriage and by purchase, including the Devenish, Marshall, Norton, Freeland, Love, Chawner and Coryton families. The name of the village has changed many times, however slightly, over the years. Greteham, Grietham, Gretham, Grutham, Gratham all derived from two separate words, the 'Old-English' (Anglo-Saxon) 'ham', meaning 'village, estate, manor or homestead' and an old Scandinavian word 'griot' or 'gryt', meaning 'stones or stony ground'. Thus the name 'Greotham' came into being, literally a 'stony estate' or 'farm on gravel'.

Clangers

The Clangers memorably spoke in a language played on swannee whistles. No one expected them to have scripts. But they did. Within an ancient barn nestled in the heart of the Kent countryside, Smallfilms founders Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin created one of the most beloved BBC children’s series of the twentieth century: Clangers. Clangers: The Complete Scripts 1969–1974 is the ultimate compendium of scripts from the original two series of the show in one lavishly illustrated volume. These previously unseen scripts sit alongside original writing from Daniel Postgate – son of the original creator Oliver Postgate – exploring the inspiration for and lasting cultural impact of the show, new and historical photographs, Peter’s original illustrations, Oliver’s handwritten musical notations and more. The joyful revelation that the Clangers’ often colourful words were scripted in English brings an exciting new dimension to the Smallfilms legacy.

This is an illustrated definitive history of Army Apprentice training at Arborfield throughout the 20th Century. Peter Gripton has firstly done a service to all Arborfield Apprentices and staff members; secondly he has done a service to clarity out of obscurity (clario ex obscurio). Of the latter, because of the diversity of sources, his seamless historical narrative is a singular success; of the former, he certainly deserves the accolades of the many Old Boys who will welcome this rendering of their story. With relevance to both of these sentiments, Peter's light and readable style gives all the appearance that he enjoyed writing this history. But, bearing in mind the dictum, that which is ...

The story of the War in Korea and of the part played by the REME from 1950 to 1953 as told by various individuals of that Corps, makes fascinating reading. The support and devotion to their colleagues is most apparent, but typical of the British soldier, these experiences are balanced with a sense of sympathy for the unfortunate Korean civilian population caught up in the conflict, and it wouldn't be a true story of the British soldier without its sprinkling of 'squaddie' humour. John Dutton has provided an excellent compilation of personal accounts in this comprehensive story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at war where the positioning of Light Aid Detachments and Field Workshops was just as important to senior commanders in their tactical planning as was the medical back-up of a Regimental Aid Post or a Field Ambulance.
