Bridging the gulf between aesthetics and politics, artist and film-maker Petra Bauer reflects on her own experience of making political films and launches a theoretical argument that uncovers the aesthetic mechanisms underlying contemporary strategies for collective and feminist film-making. An exploration in artistic research, the book draws on an extensive historical archive of radical film-making and film theory, with particular focus on the British film collectives of the 1970s and films made by Palestinian and Israeli film-makers. At the investigation?s core stands ?Sisters!?, Bauer?s collaborative film project with the London-based feminist organisation Southall Black Sisters.

Gestohlen

About the Book Peter, a classically trained musician, has fallen from grace due to numerous scandals during his tenure as a music teacher and concert pianist for the prestigious Berliner Hochschule Für Musik. Beethoven has been his life-long obsession and may be the reason his life has taken a dark turn. Like Beethoven, Peter too is easily infatuated with charming, talented women, which borders on obsession. His infatuation stems from his own need to be useful and to educate the deserving on the fascinating world of classical music in the hope that they may see the world as he does, which is impossible due to a condition known as synaesthesia. During his time at the Conservatory, a replica ...

Science, Technology and Gender studies (STG) include the different approaches to feminist epistemologies, their current debates and also the theoretical analysis of different scientific controversies around cases that involve women's bodies and health, sex/gender, and techno-scientific practices. These studies are linked to the demand for another type of hybrid knowledge that revalorizes the practices, the embodied experience and care, as well as the subject positions traditionally excluded from the scientific community. The diversity of voices has allowed a plural knowledge in techno-scientific practices to emerge as well as the identification of gender, class, sexuality, race, functional d...

Doing Transitions in the Life Course

Doing Transitions in the Life Course

This open access book provides a unique research perspective on life course transitions. Here, transitions are understood as social processes and practices. Leveraging the recent “practice turn” in the social sciences, the contributors analyze how life course transitions are “done.” This book introduces the concept of “doing transitions” and its implications for theories and methods. It presents fresh empirical research on “doing transitions” in different life phases (e.g., childhood, young adulthood, later life) and life domains (e.g., education, work, family, health, migration). It also emphasizes themes related to institutions and organizations, time and normativity, materialities (such as bodies, spaces, and artifacts), and the reproduction of social inequalities in education and welfare. In coupling this new perspective with empirical illustrations, this book is an indispensable resource for scholars from demography, sociology, psychology, social work and other scientific fields, as well as for students, counselors and practitioners, and policymakers.

Peripheral Insider

  • Categories: Art

With increased mobility and transnational interaction worldwide, internationalism in contemporary visual art is no longer exclusively a western issue. Contemporary visual art includes works by expatriate artists who have settled in the west, as well as artists outside the west reflecting on everyday events in a globalized world. Peripheral Insider examines the conditions of expatriate artists from various angles: the historical and colonial roots of the issue, positions among theorists dealing with expatriate artists in the west, the role of established art institutions, and examples of recent developments in the field. Peripheral Insider argues that expatriate art or internationalism in visual art is a phenomenon with a specific history, closely related to colonial and post-colonial experiences. The contributors elucidate the book's main theme on various theoretical levels and set forth their analyses of a number of issues relevant to new interpretations of "the post-colonial agenda."

Food Quality

The book discusses the novel scientific approaches for the improvement of the food quality and offers food scientists valuable assistance for the future. The detailed methodologies and their practical applications could serve as a fundamental reference work for the industry and a requisite guide for the research worker, food scientist and food analyst. It will serve as a valuable tool for the analysts improving their knowledge with new scientific data for quality evaluation. Two case study chapters provide data on the improvement of food quality in marine and land organisms in the natural environment.

Language teaching programs have to respond to the need for distance education, with teachers working to transfer their material onto online platforms and/or learning management systems (LMS) even though their materials are not designed with distance learning in mind. COVID-19 has led to English language teaching programs extending their teaching online for the unforeseeable future and trying to adjust the material to deliver high-quality practice. The education emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that the world needs an education system that favors flexibility and resilience to equip educators to face unpredictable emergencies that may arise. Plant Iron Homeostasis

This detailed volume focuses on iron homeostasis in plants, iron being an essential micronutrient that serves as a cofactor in numerous metabolic processes but is harmful in excess. Specifically, the content ranges from protocols to study the iron deficiency response, the interaction between root and microbes under iron deficient conditions, the transcriptional network of iron homeostasis, systemic signaling of iron, chloroplast iron regulation, as well as methods on quantitative proteomics, histochemical iron staining, metal imaging using x-ray fluorescence microscopy, and more. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step and readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Plant Iron Homeostasis: Methods and Protocols serves as a valuable resource for the plant iron homeostasis research community and will be of broad interest to plant biologists, soil scientists, and molecular biologists.

Iron Nutrition in Plants and Rhizospheric Microorganisms

This book provides a comprehensive review on the status of iron nutrition in plants. It contains updated reviews of most relevant issues involving Fe in plants and combines research on molecular biology with physiological studies of plant-iron nutrition. It also covers molecular aspects of iron uptake and storage in Arabidopsis and transmembrane movement and translocation of iron in plants. This book should serve to stimulate continued exploration in the field.
