Penurunan fungsi sel imun dipicu oleh rangsangan antigen yang terus menerus datang dan itu menyebabkan sel imun kelelahan. Ditambah dengan faktor-faktor lain di luar sistem imun, termasuk menuanya sel-sel lain, membuat sistem imun selalu aktif mencetuskan suatu peradangan derajat rendah yang kronis pada manula (inflamm-aging).
