Phase Separation in Soft Matter Physics

This is the first monograph devoted to investigation of the most complex physical processes of soft systems, including a wide class of solutions. It blends modern theoretical understanding and experimental results, proposing new methods and models for the description of several soft systems.

Measuring the hydrogen content in materials is important both for research and for various applications in material and surface sciences, such as hydrogen embrittlement of steel, controlled thermonuclear reaction first wall studies, and changed material properties caused by dissolved hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most difficult atomic species to analyze by traditional methods, but nuclear physics methods are particularly suited for this purpose. President of the Uzbek SSR Academy of Sciences P.K. Khabibullaev and Professor B.G. Skorodumov discuss in this book the characteristics of these methods, such as lower detection limits, selectivity in respect to different isotopes, accuracy, depth resolution and maximum detection depth. Examples of applications that are dealt with include the determination of material humidity, the dating of objects, the study of hydrogen diffusion including non-stationary processes, and the investigation of changes in material properties like superconductivity, plasticity and electrical properties due to contamination by hydrogen.

Innovation is key to the progress of economies that aim at being successful players in the global market. In this context, the encouragement and protection of intellectual property and a forward looking science and technology policy are essential. The various facets of intellectual property and of the science and technology policies necessary for its generation and utilization are studied by a group of experts both from NATO countries and CIS countries. A series of country-specific discussions of the problems confronting the transition from a centralized to a market economy is followed by a broad overview of outlooks, mechanisms and experiences in market economies, and by recommendations of necessary policies for participation in the global market.

The investigation of nonlinear wave phenomena has been one of the main direc tions of research in optics for the last few decades. Soliton concepts applied to the description of intense electromagnetic beams and ultrashort pulse propagation in various media have contributed much to this field. The notion of solitons has proved to be very useful in describing wave processes in hydrodynamics, plasma physics and condensed matter physics. Moreover, it is also of great importance in optics for ultrafast information transmission and storage, radiation propagation in resonant media, etc. In 1973, Hasegawa and Tappert made a significant contribution to optical soliton physics when they predicted the...

"This book presents an up-to-date survey of the theory and practical applications of optical solitons. The topics include: the dynamics of optical solitons in single- and multi-mode waveguides and in unbounded media; interactions between solitons; the effect of perturbations in a system of coupled waveguides; soliton generation from noise, and computer simulations applicable to real waveguides. Applications in information transmission and storage are also considered."--Back cover.

There are few more urgent topics in today’s world, so full of ecological uncertainty. Hydropower Economics uses various econometric measures to examine sustainable alternative energy sources. It kicks off by modeling hydropower, yes, but it does not end there. Forsund has extended his model to include thermal power and wind power, too – forms of alternative energy that are taking on an ever larger profile.
