From Plant Behavior to Plant Intelligence?
Over the past years, controversies about plant intelligence became featured in scientific journals in ecology and plant biology. Could plants be intelligent? Could it be true that they talk to each other, assist and defend each other, etc.? What is the scientific truth behind this idea of plant intelligence? Tackling the issue of intelligence in any organism requires us to study and theorize its behavior.
Andrea Cesalpino's ›De Plantis Libri XVI‹ (1583) and the Transformation of Medical Botany in the 16th Century
In 1583 the Italian botanist and physician Andrea Cesalpino (1524–1603) published De Plantis Libri XVI, made of 16 books (libri), considered to be the first treatise where botany is treated independently from medicine. In so doing, he broke with a long tradition inherited in Western science from Antiquity and perpetuated during the Middle Age through the early Renaissance. De Plantis lays the foundations of scientific systematics through a new focus on plant morphology and natural similarities and became a milestone in the history of Western botany. It is a precious testimony to the evolution of botanical and physiological knowledge in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and illustrates the role of Aristotelian philosophy in 16th-century knowledge. The volume includes an introductory essay about Cesalpino's philosophy and botany, a critical edition of the Latin text, a translation, a commentary, and indexes. It should interest scholars in Renaissance studies, historians, and philosophers of science and medicine, as well as botanists and plant scientists curious about the history of plant sciences.
Sara Angelucci: Undergrowth / Broussailles
For more than 20 years, Toronto photo-based artist Sara Angelucci has transformed found photographs and created images exposing the cultural and historical conditions outside the image frame. Her work brings attention to the social forces that generate the language of photography. Her series Aviary — which morphs extinct and endangered birds with 19th-century cartes-de-visite portraits — reveals the colonizing role the camera played in capturing animals for consumption. In her current work, Nocturnal Botanical Ontario, images of entwined native and invasive plants — made with a digital scanner — pay homage to photography as a tool of scientific inquiry. These complex botanical compositions uncover the impacts of settler colonialism and global trade on our ecology. Through acts of empathy, embodiment, and envisioning, the images and essays in Undergrowth seek to reconcile our fraught relationship with the natural world, addressing one of the most critical issues of our time.
