Open Science in Africa

There is an ongoing transition in the research enterprise towards Open Science (OS), increasing transparency in researchers’ collaboration, knowledge exchange, and how science is organized. The Open Access (OA) movement can be seen as a case study of the challenges that this transition can present. For example, despite all the advantages of OA and the fact that the concept is exceptionally strong as a principle, it is yet to be implemented across all institutions, particularly in Africa. Even though research productivity from the African continent has increased over the last two decades, the global north still dominates the scholarly communication and publication sphere. High article proce...

Navigating the Landscape of FAIR Data Sharing and Reuse: Repositories, Standards, and Resources

The huge volume of neuroscience data and the wide variety of data formats generated across different neuroscience communities has posed a challenge to traditional methods of data management, data sharing and data mining. Mandates on data sharing and the demand for using open data has driven the development of advanced methodologies and tools to effectively explore, mine and integrate data. However, the growing number of resources make it harder for researchers to navigate this landscape. Awareness of these tools and resources is vital for effective data mining and unlocking new discoveries. The goal of this research collection is to provide an overview of available resources, centred around making data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR).

Religion and State in Syria

While Syria has been dominated since the 1960s by a determinedly secular regime, the 2011 uprising has raised many questions about the role of Islam in the country's politics. This book demonstrates that with the eradication of the Muslim Brothers after the failed insurrection of 1982, Sunni men of religion became the only voice of the Islamic trend in the country. Through educational programs, charitable foundations and their deft handling of tribal and merchant networks, they took advantage of popular disaffection with secular ideologies to increase their influence over society. In recent years, with the Islamic resurgence, the Alawi-dominated Ba'thist regime was compelled to bring the clergy into the political fold. This relationship was exposed in 2011 by the division of the Sunni clergy between regime supporters, bystanders and opponents. This book affords a new perspective on Syrian society as it stands at the crossroads of political and social fragmentation.

This volume describes the social and practical aspects of Islamic mysticism (Sufism) across centuries and geographical regions. Its authors seek to transcend ethereal, essentialist and “spiritualizing” approaches to Sufism, on the one hand, and purely pragmatic and materialistic explanations of its origins and history, on the other. Covering five topics (Sufism’s economy, social role of Sufis, Sufi spaces, politics, and organization), the volume shows that mystics have been active socio-religious agents who could skillfully adjust to the conditions of their time and place, while also managing to forge an alternative way of living, worshiping and thinking. Basing themselves on the most ...

This volume looks into the need for a variety of experimental models for research on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and peripheral nervous system. It also describes a number of experimental models, such as mechanical devices, that have been developed to model neurotrauma in animal experiments. The overall aim of this book is to explore the variety of models and how they are used in current research. The chapters in this book are organized in four sections and talk about animal models for TBI; animal models for spinal cord or nerve injury; and translational aspects, secondary injuries, in vitro studies, and evaluation of large data sets. In Neuromethods series style, chapters include the kind of detail and key advice from the specialists needed to get successful results in your laboratory. Cutting-edge and comprehensive, Animal Models of Neurotrauma is a valuable resource for researchers interested in expanding their knowledge and research in this developing field.

Italy Revisited

Drawing out her mother's childhood memories of life in southern Italy at the dawn of the twentieth century, Mary Melfi takes an unconventional approach to autobiographical writing. Italy Revisited serves as a double memoir, told in dialogue between a mother and a daughter. The conversation takes the reader to a medieval town high up in the mountains where time is told by the shadow the sun casts, where wheat and olive oil are the currency of choice (barter is in use), and where marriage is as much about property as it is about love. As they re-create that vanished world, the pair finds greater understanding of the tumultuous relationships that sometimes exist between immigrant mothers and their children.
