Tenho a satisfação em apresentar aos colegas, psicólogos e professores, bem como o público acadêmico, esta obra composta por estudos da minha dissertação de mestrado intitulada "Ortopedia mental": contribuições de Helena Antipoff para educação especial. Contempla estudos das práticas inovadoras para a educação implementadas no período da reforma 1930-1935 de ensino em Minas Gerais por Antipoff e seus colaboradores. Como parte fundamental do trabalho foi proposto a estimulação da inteligência das crianças através da ortopedia mental — técnica elaborada por Alfred Binet também criador da escala métrica de desenvolvimento infantil. Tratava-se de um conjunto de exercícios voltados para estimular e promover o desenvolvimento e a organização de capacidades intelectuais nas crianças, como atenção, memória, percepção e outras. A técnica era composta de orientações aos professores, que deveriam elaborar atividades capazes de despertar o interesse das crianças e desenvolver, ao mesmo tempo, suas faculdades mentais.
Esta Coletânea, editada originalmente em 1996, resultou das atividades do Grupo de Trabalho em História da Psicologia, instituído por ocasião do VI Simpósio de Pesquisa e Intercâmbio Científico da Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Psicologia, realizado em Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, em maio de 1966.
