When one realises that thousands of liturgical chants were transmitted over more than three centuries in which there were no accurate means of melodic notation, the core repertoire of Gregorian plainchant has been transmitted with an astonishing degree of uniformity.0On the other hand, these chants are reflections of a living liturgy, and thus reflections of their particular surroundings: any monastic or collegial environment could develop its own conventions in relation to what only seems to be a uniform repertoire at first sight.0Although relationships between specific manuscripts and their associated variants of Gregorian plainchant certainly exist, how the different variants of chants developed continues to be a highly debated topic. Moreover, how these different developments were valued has varied widely.0This study sets out to map the melodic variation occurring in northern Low Countries chant manuscripts from the oldest known notations to those of the sixteenth century, and to explore their relationships and attributions through this variation.

"'Gregorian Chant: a guide to interpretation and conducting' brings together the practical experience of chant performance and its long theoretical history. Intended for every plainchant lover who wants to know more about what they are singing and why, it examines such subjects as melody, rhythm, treatment of text and conducting technique, and provides clear references to both the available corpus and the wealth of secondary literature. Practical, inspired and critically aware, this handbook comes to the aid of conductors and singers who want their performances to be historically and theologically grounded as well as musically consistent. Guided by examples from a variety of sources, readers are invited to deepen their understanding of this music which has been a meaningful part of the liturgy for over 1200 years, but in which there is still so much to discover."--

Duizend jaar doorgegeven

Music of the Twentieth Century

Music of the Twentieth Century

Ton de Leeuw was a truly groundbreaking composer. As evidenced by his pioneering study of compositional methods that melded Eastern traditional music with Western musical theory, he had a profound understanding of the complex and often divisive history of twentieth-century music. Now his renowned chronicle Music of the Twentieth Century is offered here in a newly revised English-language edition. Music of the Twentieth Century goes beyond a historical survey with its lucid and impassioned discussion of the elements, structures, compositional principles, and terminologies of twentieth-century music. De Leeuw draws on his experience as a composer, teacher, and music scholar of non-European music traditions, including Indian, Indonesian, and Japanese music, to examine how musical innovations that developed during the twentieth century transformed musical theory, composition, and scholarly thought around the globe.

The relationship between architecture and music has a long and difficult history. The subject is usually examined from the perspective of one particular discipline or the other. Music, Space and Architecture offers a multidisciplinary approach. Contributors raise the question of how does sound (and music) influence the atmosphere of a building and visa versa. What makes the perfect music hall?
