This is the first monograph on the remarkable work of British artist Richard Woods (b.1966), one of a younger generation of artists whose sculptures and installations operate on the boundary between art, architecture and design. Whatever structures he takes as his starting point - the floor of a domestic house, the walls of a gallery, the courtyard of a convent or the external walls of a public building - they are all used as flat surfaces to be embellished with paint.A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, Woods has shown extensively in Britain, continental Europe, Japan and the USA. Over the past five years, he has designed a spectacular store interior for the fashion house Comme des G...
A contemporary of the famous landscape designer `Capability' Brown, Richard Woods has never received the recognition he deserves: in contrast to Brown, he emphasised the pleasure ground and kitchen garden, with a more pronounced use of flowers than was general among the landscape improvers of his time. He liked variety and incident in his plans and, where he was employed on a larger scale, the encroachment of the pleasure ground into the park created the Woodsian 'pleasure park'. In this important work of detection and biography, Fiona Cowell analyses his designs, and explores his activities as a plantsman, a determined amateur architect and a farmer. In particular, she shows the difficulties he found as a Catholic living in penal times, examining the difficulties encountered by both Woods and his Catholic patrons, and placing the man and his work in their wider social and economic context. Unjustly neglected in the past, he is here given his rightful place among the creators of the English landscape style.

Unlearn! Because Life Can Make You Stupid is a kick in the groin to the self-help industry. Without any sugarcoating, author Richard Woods confronts societal normalcy, political correctness, and perceived morality in a blistering attack on today's American culture. Americans continue to practice certain unrealistic behaviors at the urging of many so-called self-help gurus. For example, even though the diet and relationship industries gross millions of dollars each year, people continue to gain weight and get divorced. Woods maintains that if you want to make a real change in your life, you must be honest with yourself. You need to unlearn much of the ideology ingrained since childhood and re...
