IN THE WORLD: A Collection Of Stories, Poems, And Reflections takes up where Richard Leiter's debut novel, Leaving Home, left off. The protagonist, Franklin Cohen, now finds himself living in a seedy Single Room Occupancy hotel on The Upper West Side of New York City, circa 1976, where he encounters a variety of colorful, dysfunctional characters. After describing some of them in the initial stories, the narrator then proceeds to meditate upon a variety of subjects ranging from the aesthetics of writing to what he perceives to be the pitiable state of the human species. Although not strictly autobiographical, IN THE WORLD: A Collection Of Stories, Poems, And Reflections does indeed have a sort of loose autobiographical progression to it; with each piece, in its own way, infused with a sensibility at once amazed, and yet at the same time amused, by the antics of The Earth's inhabitants.

Franklin Cohen is on a mission: He is an extraterrestrial from another galaxy who has been teleported down to Earth in order to learn whatever he can about humanity. In order to do this without being detected, however, he has to pretend to be a human himself in order to disguise the fact that he really isn't. And so Franklin Cohen The Extraterrestrial now becomes Franklin Cohen The College Graduate. The Dewey-Eyed, Dreamy English Major. Unemployed. Unemployable. Completely unconcerned about his lack of direction. And now living back at home with his pushy parents, who find that appalling lack of concern of his ever-increasingly more exasperating. Written in the form of a superficially conventional "coming-of-age" novel of innocence lost; its true purpose is to subvert the form by means of a constant flurry of irreverent reflections and ironical musings concerning the human condition. As such, Leaving Home is at once a realistic and yet wickedly absurdist, experimental literary endeavor.

My Pain Is Greater Than Your Pain; My Laughter, Greater Than Your Laughter

My Pain Is Greater Than Your Pain; My Laughter, Greater Than Your Laughter

I had just finished writing my coming-of-age, debut novel entitled Leaving Home-that highly imaginative and inspired attempt to infuse new life into an old literary form. And now that I had finally finished it, I wanted to write a sequel to it. Only... I didn't just want to write a conventional sequel. I wanted to write an "unorthodox" one. Something different. Something off of the beaten path. Basically, what I wanted to do was to describe what my life had been like on The Earth after it had finally begun to sink in that I was permanently stuck here-that I was permanently marooned here-on this only very thinly veiled lunatic asylum. After giving the matter a great deal of thought, I finally decided that I would try to accomplish this lofty, Olympian goal of mine-not by writing a single piece-but, rather, by compiling a number of pieces-stories, poetry, reflections and journal entries-into one all-embracing, comprehensive volume. In addition, the collection would have a kind of "loose" semi-autobiographical progression to it-starting at the point where Leaving Home leaves off.... Here, then, is the collection.
