De gang naar het museum met schoolklassen is nooit echt van de grond gekomen. Er blijken allerlei beletselen te bestaan, zowel in het onderwijsveld als in de museumwereld. Niet alleen bij de kunstmusea, maar ook die van wetenschap en techniek, volkenkunde, natuur en regionale geschiedenis. Die belemmeringen bestaan al decennia lang en lijken maar niet uit de weg te ruimen. De Initiatiefgroep Musea en Onderwijs is spontaan opgericht door vertegenwoordigers van musea en onderwijsinstellingen, omdat zij de tijd rijp vonden voor fundamentele vernieuwingen van de onderlinge relaties. Zij wil onderwijskundige vernieuwingen en veranderde museologische inzichten aangrijpen om partijen nader tot elkaar te brengen. Het probleem is echter complex, Musea en onderwis leven in gesloten culturen, zij koesteren verkeerde verwachtingen van elkaar, er is onvoldoende informatie-uitwisseling, er zijn organisatorische belemmeringen en er is een gebrek aan financiële middelen om veranderingen door te voeren. Dit boek laat zien wat beide partijen er zelf aan kunnen doen om elkaar te leren waarderen en benutten.
