Growing Old in a Better World
As utopias question social ills and express human wants and unfulfilled dreams, they offer insights into the problems, desires and ideals of a certain time. This book uses this lens to examine cultural representations of ageing and old age in utopian writings from the Renaissance to today. The individual chapters offer detailed analyses and interpretations of numerous utopias from Thomas More's Utopia (1516) to contemporary science fiction. Through close readings, the book explores age-related fears and ideals and investigates how perceptions of ageing and the life course as well as attitudes towards older people have developed over the centuries. Covering a large time span and a broad range of different utopias, the book identifies long-term developments and also puts certain dreams such as that of ever-lasting youth into a wider perspective. It thus enriches both our understanding of the cultural history of ageing as well as the history of utopian thought. The book will appeal to scholars and students from the fields of cultural gerontology and utopian studies, as well as literary studies and cultural history more generally.

The Rise of the Anglo-German Antagonism Between 1888 And 1914
Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Dresden Technical University, language: English, abstract: Despite moments of mutual rapprochement, the relation between Britain and Germany constantly deteriorated in the years between 1888 and 1914. In contrast to works as Paul Kennedy's "The Rise of the Anglo-German Antagonism", this text is not supposed to explain all the single incidents that contributed to the deterioration of Anglo-German relations but to clarify the main developments which were the basis for the rise of the antagonism. Therefore the fundamental differences in the understanding of Germany's political role, Germany's economic rise and Wilhelm's personal relation with the English royalty have to be taken into consideration, and only those incidents will be discussed which had such an enormous influence on the relation between both nations that they cannot be omitted in a discussion trying to explain the growing Anglo-German antagonism will be discussed.

Body Utopianism
This book investigates how desires to transform our bodies can bring utopia to the present, and how utopian practices often lead to distinctly dystopian or anti-utopian outcomes. It is the first comprehensive study to address the paradoxical relationship between bodies and utopianism. Franziska Bork Petersen discusses doping, bodybuilding and cosmetic surgery alongside practices such as retouching the ‘body as image’ on social media, and looks at how fashion modelling and performance ‘estrange’ the body. Techniques and technologies to transform our bodies are increasingly accessible and suggest an excessive identification of the body as lacking. To ‘be a body’ in a culturally meaningful way, we incessantly improve our bodily appearance and capacity. The book therefore addresses the utopianism inherent in a cultural understanding of bodies as increasingly controllable.
