Government Quality and Spatial Inequality

This paper examines the relationship between government quality and spatial inequality across 46 countries over the period 1996-2006. The results of the analysis point to the existence of a negative and significant association between government quality and the magnitude of regional disparities. Countries with better quality of government register lower levels of spatial inequality. This finding is robust to the inclusion in the analysis of additional explanatory variables that may affect both regional disparities and governance outcomes. The observed link between government quality and spatial inequality is confirmed by various robustness tests.

Does Ethnic Segregation Matter for Spatial Inequality?

The paper examines the link between ethnic segregation and spatial inequality in 71 countries with different levels of economic development. The results reveal that ethnic segregation is associated with significantly higher levels of spatial inequality. This finding is not affected by the inclusion of various covariates that may influence both spatial inequality and the geographical distribution of ethnic groups, and is confirmed by a number of robustness tests. The results also suggest that political decentralization and the quality of government could act as transmission channels linking ethnic segregation and spatial inequality.

This paper investigates the relationship between volatility and economic growth in the European regions over the period 1995-2008. To that end, we estimate a two-way fixed effects panel data model using spatial econometric techniques that allow us to incorporate into the analysis the relevance of spatial effects in the processes of regional growth in Europe. The results show the existence of a positive and statistically significant relationship between the uctuations of the business cycle and regional growth, which is mainly consequence of the spatial spillovers induced by the incidence of volatility in neighbouring regions. This finding is robust to the inclusion in the analysis of differen...

Regional Mobility in the European Union

Abstract: This paper examines regional mobility in the spatial distribution of per capita in- come in the European Union over the period 1977-1999. The methodology used to investigate this issue combines a series of measures taken from the literature devoted to the dynamic study of personal income distribution with a non-parametric analysis. The results show limited mobility in the distribution considered, and a decline in mobility over time. The empirical evidence presented indicates, moreover, that mobility patterns vary as a function of regional development levels. Additionally, the analysis carried out investigates the role played in explaining intra-distribution mobility by variables such as per capita income, population density, per capita expenditure in investment, market potential, and the share in total employment of agriculture, advanced services and non-market services

Is There a Link Between Globalisation and Civil Conflict?

This paper investigates the empirical relationship between globalisation and civil conflict in a sample of 159 countries over the period 1972-2009. To that end, we use a measure of globalisation that distinguishes the social and political dimensions of integration from the economic dimension, thus allowing us to adopt a broader perspective than in most of existing studies. The results show that the inclusion of country fixed effects removes the statistical association between the degree of integration with the rest of the world and the incidence of internal conflict. We present instrumental variables estimates that also show no causal effect of globalisation on civil conflict. These findings do not depend either on the specific dimension of globalisation considered or the measure of conflict used in the analysis. Likewise, the absence of a relationship between globalisation and civil conflict is not driven by countries located in the most conflictive regions in the world.

This book uses a unique and innovative way to show the benefits and perils of decentralization as a mechanism to solve internal ethnic conflicts. It explores how administrative, fiscal, and political dimensions of decentralization have affected the process of ethnic minorities' accommodation in Kosovo. It provides analysis and answers on how decentralization has reduced the chances of a conflict. It also critically examines the impact of the agreement for establishing the Association of Serb Majority Municipalities on decentralization and the overall governance system of Kosovo. Lenhard Hamza is an independent political scientist engaged in international development cooperation. He uses his fieldwork to research and create new ways of thinking on Decentralization and Local Governance in theory and practice.
