Psychobiological correlates of eating behaviour in middle-aged women

The aim of this thesis is to determine selected psychobiological aspects of eating behavior in middle-aged women. For this purpose, two studies were conducted. In the first study, the association between menopausal status, self-esteem and restrained eating in middle-aged women was examined. Postmenopausal women showed higher scores in restrained eating than premenopausal women. Further analyses indicate a U-shaped relationship between self-esteem and restrained eating. Self-esteem serves as a mediator between menopausal status and restrained eating. These results suggest that restrained eating could be a more widespread phenomenon in middle-aged women than generally believed. In the second s...

Physiological responses to acute and chronic stress in young healthy men

The purpose of the present thesis was two studies. The goal of the first study was to evaluate the efficiency of the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G) and its ability to repeatedly evoke an affective and autonomic stress response by means of two different protocols in a second measurement. The aim of the second study was to investigate the effect of prolonged mental and physical stress induced by basic military training (BMT) on hair cortisol concentration (HCC), while further exploring the role of covariates. Healthy young recruits participated twice, 10 weeks apart. In the first examination, the TSST-G consisted of a combination of mental arithmetic and a fake job interview (n =...

Biopsychosocial Determinants of Well-being in Contemporary Fatherhood

The aim of the present thesis was to increase knowledge about the predictors for a fulfilling fatherhood across different contexts of contemporary fatherhood. Two empirical studies were conducted to investigate the consequences of different family constellations for paternal psychological well-being, and the role of testosterone for paternal role satisfaction. In the first study, findings demonstrated that fathers living in stable two-parent families with biological children had the highest level of psychological well-being when compared to fathers with other family forms. By contrast, a history of family separation in separated biological fathers and blended-family fathers, and the concomit...

This concise book provides an accessible overview of the history of the telenovela in Latin America within a pan-Latino context, including the way the genre crosses borders between Latin America and the United States. Telenovelas, a distinct variety of soap operas originating in Latin America, take up key issues of race, class, sexual identity and violence, interweaving stories with melodramatic romance and quests for identity. June Carolyn Erlick examines the social implications of telenovela themes in the context of the evolution of television as an integral part of the modernization of Latin American countries.
