Displacement
This book aims to develop global conversations around refuge. Through an interdisciplinary, transnational and historical set of chapters, the authors develop new theoretical frameworks for scholars working on the forced displacement of people around the world, including refugees, stateless persons, internally displaced persons and others.
Urbanizing Citizenship
Urbanizing Citizenship examines processes of urbanization in contemporary Indian cities through the lens of urban citizenship. It provides a fresh understanding of the multiple arenas and practices through which citizenship and urbanism are co-constituted in India. Bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars working on India, this book looks closely at six Indian cities—Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Varanasi—and examines a range of processes and contested urban spaces, thus exploring and analyzing their myriad implications for urban inhabitants and their right to the city. Through ethnographies and histories of the urban, this book unsettles theories generated in the Euro-American context to show how urban citizenship might be differently practiced, understood, and reconfigured within the Indian context.
Displacement
As an unprecedented number of people are displaced around the world, scholars continue to strive to make sense of what appear to be a series of constantly unfolding ‘crises.’ Drawing on research in a range of regions – from Latin America, to Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, North America, post-Soviet regions, and South and South-East Asia – Displacement offers an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to thinking about structures, spaces, and lived experiences of displacement. The contributors engage in a historical, transnational, interdisciplinary dialogue to offer different ways of theorizing about refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people and others that have been forcibly displaced. Representing a collective effort by sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, political scientists, historians and migration studies scholars, this volume develops new cross-regional conversations and theoretically innovative vocabularies in the work on forced displacement. It also draws forced displacement together with other contemporary issues across different disciplines such as urbanisation, race, and imperialism.
