The Rundle name can be traced back to the Norman conquest. Rundles spread through Cornwall and Devon in south west England during the 15th and 16th centuries. Our branch of the Rundle family had been tenant farmers at Bratton Clovelly in Devon for several generations. This is the story of James Rundle and Jane Ellis who were born at Bratton Clovelly, and married in 1855. They were tenant farmers at Higher Voaden. With their young family of five children they emigrated to South Australia in 1863. They initially settled in the Yankalilla area but purchased land and moved to the Kulpara-Paskeville district in 1877. This book describes how three generations of the family farmed the land, initially in Devon and then in various parts of South Australia. It documents their hardships, achievements and contribution to the life of their rural communities as they strove to bring land into production and build properties that would provide for their growing families.

In 1936 Silas Rundle, who had farmed for over 20 years at Caliph in the Murray Mallee, brought his wife, Florrie, and three children, Jim, Bruce and Beryl to a newly acquired property at Mount Crawford. Two generations of the Rundle family lived and farmed there until the 1980s. In addition to improving the land they also built homes, raised families and contributed to the life of the rural community. This book documents their life at Mount Crawford, their interactions with neighbours and their connections with the wider extended family. More than a family history it also describes changes in farming technology over more than 50 years.
