The Judengasse in Frankfurt
The Judengasse in Frankfurt, which was established in 1462, was the first ghetto in Europe and one of the most important centers of European Jewry until it was dissolved in 1796. This book accompanies the new permanent exhibition in the Judengasse Museum. It presents Jewish history and culture from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. Featuring paintings, ritual objects, books and documents – and examining these in conjunction with archeological finds – it paints a rich portrait of everyday life in the Judengasse.
Jewish Studies Between the Disciplines / Judaistik zwischen den Disziplinen
Peter Schäfer who celebrated his 60th birthday on 29 June 2003 has left a decidedly firm imprint on the young discipline "Jewish Studies" in Germany, which could only be set up at a German university after the Shoah. For someone directing a “small” academic institution he has managed during his academic career to guide and influence a strikingly large number of students in their scholarly pursuits in the field. The collected essays of this volume encompass quite a variety of topics, whereby the focal points in Peter Schäfer’s own research are not difficult to recognize in the themes chosen by his former students: mysticism and magic are most conspicuous, followed by Rabbinic Judaism and the studies on the Middle Ages and the Early Modern and Modern Periods. Of note is also the fact that the methodological approaches of these contributions are no less manifold than their themes. Part of the contributions of this book were submitted in English, and all the German-language texts have an English summary or abstract.

Die Zukunft der Erinnerung
Ausgehend vom Gedenken an die Pogromnacht von 1938 untersucht der Band die Bedeutungswandlungen der Erinnerung an die Shoa und an die Geschichte jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland sowie die aktuellen Entwicklungen der erinnerungspolitischen Debatte, der Erinnerungsforschung und der Gedenkkultur. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage nach den zukünftigen Formen und Inhalten des Erinnerns und seiner institutionellen Manifestationen in politischen Diskursen, in der Wissenschaft und in den Gedenkorten. Wie kann die Erinnerung an die jüdische Geschichte in Deutschland und Europa, an die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung der jüdischen Minderheit und an den Völkermord auch mehr als 80 Jahre nach der Pogromnacht aufrecht erhalten werden und wirksam bleiben?
Die Frankfurter Judengasse
Die Frankfurter Judengasse wurde 1462 als erstes Ghetto in Europa eingerichtet und war bis zu dessen Auflösung 1796 eines der bedeutendsten Zentren des europäischen Judentums. Das neu gestaltete Jüdische Museum Frankfurt präsentiert anschaulich Geschichte und Kultur dieser wichtigen jüdischen Gemeinde. Die neue Dauerausstellung des Museum Judengasse zeigt die Geschichte und Kultur der Juden vom Mittelalter bis zum 18. Jahrhundert. Dabei ist das Museum Teil eines historischen Ensembles, das den ins Mittelalter zurückgehenden jüdischen Friedhof und die 1996 eröffnete Gedenkstätte für die aus Frankfurt deportierten und ermordeten Juden umfasst. In den archäologischen Überresten werden Gemälde, Ritualobjekte, Bücher und Dokumente aus dem ehemaligen Ghetto ausgestellt. Mediale Inszenierungen veranschaulichen den historischen Kontext. Der reich bebilderte Katalog zeichnet ein genaues Bild des alltäglichen und kulturellen Lebens.
Word-Formation and Creolisation
This book explores a relatively little investigated area of creole languages, word-formation. It provides the most comprehensive account so far of the word-formation patterns of an English-based creole language, Sranan, as found in its earliest sources, and compares them with the patterns attested in the input languages. Compound Stress in English
This volume addresses several claims about the two prominence patterns found in English nominal compounds in a rigorously empirical way. Listener proficiency to identify these patterns is investigated, and the acoustic properties that distinguish the patterns are identified. These properties are used to predict statistically the prominence pattern of any given compound. The book further analyzes the semantic and structural factors influencing the distribution of the prominence patterns, and addresses the extent of within- and across-speaker variability in English compound stress assignment.
