Research into Pre-Roman Burial Grounds in Italy results from a specialist workshop held at the University of Groningen in 2011 highlighting new results in the field of funerary archaeology. It contains papers on funerary sites in Italy ranging from Verucchio in Emila Romagna to Francavilla Marittima in Calabria between the 9th and 4th centuries BC. Four papers deal with the hundreds of tombs excavated at Crustumerium (Rome). Other papers deal with the necropoleis of Francavilla Marittima, Satricum, Verucchio, Vetulonia and Veii. The volume concludes with an article on the excavation of 3700 medieval and later graves around St. Peter's church in the centre of Berlin offering an example of recent developments in recording and assessing large funerary datasets. Archaeologists working on pre-Roman Italy are indeed frequently confronted with large burial grounds holding hundreds to thousands of graves and having complex excavation and publication histories. These and other challenges of funerary archaeology are conscientiously and creatively addressed by the authors in this volume.
This unique volume teaches those in the medical fields about the scientific value of neuropsychology in assessing cognition, the 6th vital sign, as part of well integrated collaborative care. It offers physicians a comprehensive tour of the many dimensions neuropsychology can add to primary and specialized medical care across the lifespan. Noted experts examine cognitive ramifications of a wide range of medical, psychological, and neuropsychological conditions, among them brain tumors, stroke, epilepsy, pediatric and adult TBI, schizophrenia, and adult ADHD. The books generous selection of case examples demonstrates the benefits of cognitive assessment in building accurate diagnoses, better ...
This handbook provides a critical review and user’s guide to conducting and reporting process tracing studies of decision making. Each chapter covers a specific method that is presented and reviewed by authors who are experts in the method’s application to decision research. The book ultimately illustrates and presents a multi-method approach and is essential reading for graduate students and researchers wishing to undertake such studies on decision making.
A concise introductory textbook on the development of the nervous system This textbook offers a concise introduction to the exciting field of developmental neuroscience, a discipline concerned with the mechanisms by which complex nervous systems emerge during embryonic growth. Bridging the divide between basic and clinical research, it captures the extraordinary progress that has been achieved in the field. It provides an opportunity for students to apply and extend what they have learned in their introductory biology courses while also directing them to the primary literature. This accessible textbook is unique in that it takes an in-depth look at a small number of key model systems and sig...
As technology changes, so too have its applications and our uses and experiences with them have changed as well. The emergence of new technologies offer opportunities for new ways of interacting, playing, working and learning. It is within the context of simultaneous excitement and anxiety that the author discusses virtual social networks.
Neuroscience has long been focused on understanding neural plasticity in both development and adulthood. Experimental work in this area has focused almost entirely on plasticity at excitatory synapses. A growing body of evidence suggests that plasticity at inhibitory GABAergic and glycinergic synapses is of critical importance during both development and aging. The book brings together the work of researchers investigating inhibitory plasticity at many levels of analysis and in several different preparations. This topic is of wide relevance across a number of different areas of research in neuroscience and neurology. Medical problems such as epilepsy, mental illness, drug abuse, and movement disorders can result from malfunctioning inhibitory circuits. Further, the maturation of inhibitory circuits may trigger the onset of critical periods of neural circuit plasticity, raising the possibility that such plastici periods could be reactivated for medical benefit by manipulating inhibitory circuitry.
This book provides a practical, multidisciplinary approach to support a broad range of health professionals, social workers, public health workers and others tasked with providing health and care to young adults. The continuum of life begins with the health and wellness of parents prior to conception, followed by embryonic and fetal development, and continues throughout life. Each person’s life stages prepare them for the next and determine their health outcome and wellbeing over time. The text highlights the importance of promoting health throughout the lifespan, the influence of intergenerational health, and the concept of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease in epigenetic pro...
