Critical Essays on Literature, Language, and Aesthetics

This volume of critical essays explores various facets of the social sciences and humanities from an interdisciplinary perspective. The essays gathered here have been culled from different aspects of humanities research in order to widen the scope of research possibilities. The dialogic mode in which the essays are arranged lends a unique texture to the book. This volume will be of interest to researchers, academics and even the casual reader with an interest in the humanities. The rich array of topics covered here gives an inkling of the range of Professor Milind Malshe’s research interests and his academic associations in his career as a scholar and mentor. The different sections in this volume engage in a performance of sorts, allowing a free play of many voices—identified as the core to teaching and research in the humanities.

Contagion Narratives

This volume is a collection of ten essays that direct their gaze to the unfolding of contagions in the non-classical contexts of Asia and Africa. Or, to borrow from the title of one of Partha Chatterjee’s books, they are reflections on the pandemic in most of the world. Featuring many scholars (of the humanities and social sciences) in the Global South, these chapters take as their intellectual focus the political-social as well as the ethical challenges posed by the contagions in the "East." Through analyses of literary narratives/films/video games, this Contagion Narratives traces the manufactured narratives of victimization by majority-communities and the lethal divides consequently bei...

THE FUTURISTIC INDIA

The Futuristic India is an anthology dedicated as a token of love for my country on behalf of her 75 years of Independence. India is a land known for its classic motto- ‘unity in diversity’. A country like India had to face several obstacles and shackles in the path of freedom in various forms. The oppression of the British Empire over petty Indians were practiced all over the nation by slavery, exploitation of power and justice. People’s right to express their opinions was completely forbidden during colonial rule. Apart from exploitation, misuse of power was a great havoc for the indigenous citizens. They miserably toiled in the hands of colonialism. When colonization crossed the bou...

This sixth edition has been revised and updated throughout, using key concepts and examples to guide the reader through this fascinating area, including: • New material on gender, social media and online use of langua...

Empiricism and the Early Theory of the Novel

This book is about the empiricist challenge to literature, and its influence on eighteenth-century theories of fiction. British empiricism from Bacon to Hume challenged the notion that imaginative literature can be a reliable source of knowledge. This book argues that theorists of the novel, from Henry Fielding to Jane Austen, recognized the force of the empiricist challenge but refused to capitulate. It traces how, in their reflections on the novel, these writers attempted to formulate a theoretical link between the world of experience and the products of the imagination, and thus update the old defenses of poetry for empirical times. Taken together, the empiricist challenge and the responses it elicited signaled a transition in the longstanding debate about literature and knowledge, as an inaugural round in the persisting conflict between the empirical sciences and the literary humanities.
