The reliability of animal signals is a central problem for evolutionary biologists. This text argues that it is maintained in several ways, relevant in different circumstances, and that biologists must learn to distinguish between them.
This book presents a comprehensive overview of the science of the history of life. Paleobiologists bring many analytical tools to bear in interpreting the fossil record and the book introduces the latest techniques, from multivariate investigations of biogeography and biostratigraphy to engineering analysis of dinosaur skulls, and from homeobox genes to cladistics. All the well-known fossil groups are included, including microfossils and invertebrates, but an important feature is the thorough coverage of plants, vertebrates and trace fossils together with discussion of the origins of both life and the metazoans. All key related subjects are introduced, such as systematics, ecology, evolution...
This interdisciplinary volume provides a comprehensive and rich analysis of the century-long socio-ecological transformation of Lake Naivasha, Kenya. Major globalised processes of agricultural intensification, biodiversity conservation efforts, and natural-resource extraction have simultaneously manifested themselves in this one location. These processes have roots in the colonial period and have intensified in the past decades, after the establishment of the cut-flower industry and the geothermal-energy industry. The chapters in this volume exemplify the multiple, intertwined socio-environmental crises that consequently have played out in Naivasha in the past and the present, and that continue to shape its future.

What happens when a political divide goes horribly wrong in a key Presidential Election? Washington DC is about to face a serial killer who isn't loyal to either party. The investigation makes him doubt his self worth as a detective until Jessica helps him weather the storm. Jessica's best friend was one of the murder victims. Charles and Jessica work together in solving the case while the killer pushes their quest for justice to the edge. "Is God Watching" is David Harper's debut novel. He admires Walter Mosley and John Grisham. He was raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC. He worked for years as a professional actor and got his big break on the TV show "Homicide: Life On The Street." He is also a screenwriter and filmmaker.
Think you're eating healthy? Think again. For the past forty years, we have been slowly eating ourselves to death--and doing so based on government guidelines about what constitutes a healthy diet. This grand low-fat, high-carbohydrate dietary experiment has led to epidemic increases in obesity and other chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. It's time to hit the reset button. In BioDiet, Health educator and researcher Dr. David G. Harper offers a new, scientifically validated approach: a low-carbohydrate, high-fat, ketogenic plan that works with the body's natural processes to improve health and reverse decades of damage caused by our collective carbohydrate addiction. BioDiet isn't a "diet" in the usual sense: it's not a quick fix designed to help shed ten pounds before beach season. Drawing on his professional experience and the latest research in nutritional science, BioDiet is a lifestyle that will leave you healthier and happier. No hype or gimmicks: it's what the science says.
On June 27-28, 2018, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) convened an international workshop in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on developing norms for the provision of laboratories in low-resource contexts. The U.S. Department of State's Biosecurity Engagement Program requested that the National Academies organize this workshop to engage an international group of organizations that provide funding for construction, upgrades, and maintenance of biological laboratories in countries without the means to build such labs themselves. Twenty-one people from 19 organizations participated. The intent was to advance the conversation about the identification and application of guiding principles and common norms for use by these organizations in their grants, partnerships, and aid. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
