Bamboo occupies an unparalleled position in the plant kingdom in terms of its distribution, diversity and uses in the tropics and subtropics. In addition to featuring prominently in the lives of rural communities, particularly in Asia, it continues to find new applications in such wide ranging areas as paper and rayon manufacture; construction; architecture; engineering; handicrafts; food and medicine. Within Asia, India is second only to China in terms of the quantities and varieties of bamboo species found in the country. However, as in many other countries, information on this subject is generally inadequate and inaccessible. Contradictory reports on various aspects of bamboos, especially...

This monograph aims at bringing out a comprehensive collection of information on bamboo varieties in South Asia. The main focus of this book is to address the ecological and economic significance of bamboos. Bamboo is a versatile group of plants, capable of providing ecological, economic and livelihood security to the people. In the tropics, especially the rural areas in different countries of South Asia, most of the houses are made of bamboos. In the hilly areas of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and India, the tribal people take bamboo shoots as one of their major food items since prehistoric days. With palatable shoots and grass like leaves bamboo plants have also been liked by many herbivore a...

Bone disease, particularly osteoporosis, has emerged as a common and serious complication of solid organ transplantation. In recent years there have been real advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of bone loss, however treatment studies have been relatively sparse and successful strategies to reduce skeletal morbidity after transplantation remain to be clearly established. Bone Disease of Organ Transplantation provides a unique resource for the many health professionals involved with transplantation of bone disease, both in terms of its scientific background and the management of the disease in clinical practice. This is Volume 7 of the series At the Feet of a Himalayan Master and includes the reminiscences of eight disciples of Swami Rama, five women and 3 men, three living in the US, one from the UK and four from India. This takes the total numbers of contributors to the series to 33 disciples who have generously shared their inspiring experiences with the Master. As with previous volumes of this series, readers will discover the many dimensions of Swami Rama. The authors of this volume are from diverse backgrounds: geographic, cultural, economic, religious professional. Despite these differences, they were drawn by Swamiji's compassion, love and caring mentorship. he could be a tough taskmaster, but knowing that this was also a manifestation of his love, disciples were not discouraged or driven away, but continued to work on their shortcomings. It is now more than two decades since Wamiji dropped his mortal coil, but his love, guidance and presence continue to instruct and inspire. May the younger generation of spiritual seekers who were born after Swamiji's mortal demise, find inspiration in these volumes and learn to discover the divinity that dwells within them.

The Role of Ascorbic Acid in Growth, Differentiation and Metabolism of Plants

There is a paucity of information on the dynamics of Ascorbic Acid (AA) turnover in relation to germination, metabolism, growth, differentiation and development of a plant and in those undergoing stress of various types. in presowing treatment of seeds etc. The turnover of AA plays an important role during the juvenile phase of growth of a plant and has a significant bearing on its subsequent growth, development and maturation. The beneficial effect of presowing treatment of seed with Ascorbic Acid (AA) + H2 O highlights the validity of the AA-nucleic acid 2 protein metabolism concept of growth and development of plan ts. During the course of the last 30 years, work has been undertaken by the author and his collaborators on the meta bolic drifts of regulatory substances during juvenile, vegetative, reproductive and senescent phases. The most important of these growth regulatory substances was found to be Ascorbic Acid. The dynamiC role of AA turnover is revealed by its control of rates of metabolic processes as well as those of enzymic reactions which paves the way to "New Genetics".

Impacts of Medications on Male Fertility

The over-arching goal of this volume is to help infertility practitioners evaluate and manage their patients with poor semen quality. The authors review the existing literature on the effects of medications on male fertility, and provide detailed information about what is known, giving the number of individuals and population characteristics for studies of medication effects on male fertility. Medications are designed to treat illness and reduce symptoms, but all have undesirable adverse effects such as headache or stomach upset. Some adverse reactions can even be life-threatening, so it is no surprise that some drugs have negative effects on male reproduction. Medical practitioners rarely consider a man’s reproductive plans when prescribing medications. Men are routinely treated with drugs that can impair or abolish fertility. Although practitioners in the field of reproductive medicine generally realize that certain drugs impact negatively on reproductive health, there are limited resources providing evidence-based knowledge useful in counseling patients. Tables throughout this volume summarize the information for each drug, providing a handy reference for clinical use.

Internet of Things Enabled Antennas for Biomedical Devices and Systems

The book consists of the latest research in biomedical and communication integration. It discusses the fabrication and testing outcomes of the Internet of Things-enabled biomedical applications. The book focuses on recent advances in the field of planar antenna design and their applications in space communication, mobile communication, wireless communication, and wearable applications. Planar antennas are also used in medical applications in microwave imaging, medical implants, hyperthermia treatments, and wireless wellness monitoring. This book presents planar antenna design concepts, methods, and techniques to enhance the performance parameters and applications for IoT and device-to-device communication. It provides the latest techniques used for the design of antennas in terms of their structures, defected ground, MIMO, and fractal design. This book also addresses the specific steps to resolve issues in designing antennas and how to design conformal and miniaturized antenna structures for various applications.
