Archaic Transitions in Ohio and Kentucky Prehistory

After the last Ice Age, the southern Lake Erie basin and the Ohio valley were characterized by biotic zones that influenced cultural development of archaic Native American populations. This text looks at the transition from nomadic hunting and gathering to the rise of food production in this area.

Alternative Adsorbents for the Removal of Polar Organic Contaminants

This project studies the application of high-silica zeolites for the removal of polar organic contaminants, i.e., antimicrobial compounds and the fuel additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), from drinking water. Recently published data show that high-silica zeolites, a class of crystalline adsorbents with well defined pore sizes, exhibit considerably larger single-solute MTBE adsorption capacities than activated carbons and carbonaceous resins. The effectiveness of high-silica zeolites is compared to that of activated carbons and a carbonaceous resin.

Handbook of Positive Psychology

Psychology has long been enamored of the dark side of human existence, rarely exploring a more positive view of the mind. What has psychology contributed, for example, to our understanding of the various human virtues? Regrettably, not much. The last decade, however, has witnessed a growing movement to abandon the exclusive focus on the negative. Psychologists from several subdisciplines are now asking an intriguing question: "What strengths does a person employ to deal effectively with life?" The Handbook of Positive Psychology provides a forum for a more positive view of the human condition. In its pages, readers are treated to an analysis of what the foremost experts believe to be the fundamental strengths of humankind. Both seasoned professionals and students just entering the field are eager to grasp the power and vitality of the human spirit as it faces a multitude of life challenges. The Handbook is the first systematic attempt to bring together leading scholars to give voice to the emerging field of positive psychology.

Removal of EDCs and Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water

EDCs and pharmaceuticals are groups of emerging contaminants that have been detected at trace concentrations in waters around the world. These contaminants encompass a vast range of molecular structure and properties. Sparse data exist on the occurrence and fate of these emerging contaminants during water treatment. This project investigated EDC/pharmaceutical occurrence in U.S. drinking water and the efficacy of conventional and advanced water treatment processes to reduce the concentrations of these contaminants. The objectives of this study were to (1) select a diverse group of representative endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals, (2) develop a robust analytical method...

Removal of EDCs and Pharmaceuticals in Drinking and Reuse Treatment Processes

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are groups of emerging contaminants that have been detected at trace concentrations in waters around the world. This project studies the monitoring and removal of various EDCs and PPCPs.
