This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Joint IAPR International Workshops on Structural and Syntactic Pattern Recognition (SSPR 2012) and Statistical Techniques in Pattern Recognition (SPR 2012), held in Hiroshima, Japan, in November 2012 as a satellite event of the 21st International Conference on Pattern Recognition, ICPR 2012. This volume contains all papers presented at SSPR 2002 and SPR 2002 hosted by the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, August 6-9, 2002.
