Invective Discourse
Invective phenomena with the purpose or effect of marginalization and exclusion, of insult and debasement, of discrimination and verbal aggression have long been in the focus of discourse-analytical research. Among the various linguistic disciplines that deal with invective communication, discourse approaches have a particular analytical potential. They shift the focus to discursive conditions and the effects of power relations which make invective practices possible in the first place, and shed light on their contextual and epistemic embeddings. The interdisciplinary volume is devoted to the forms, formats, and effects of invective communication in both contemporary and historical discourse constellation, from different cultural contexts and in diverse media constellations. The contributions from the fields of linguistics, literature, and sociology thus demonstrate the potentials of discourse-analytical approaches in the study of invectives and invectivity.
Information Processing and Synaptic Transmission
The brain is probably the most complex machinery for information processing we can imagine. The amount of data it manages is extremely huge. Any conscious or unconscious event both internal and coming from the environment needs to be perceived, elaborated, and responded with an appropriate action. Moreover, the high-level activities of mind require the connection of logical elaboration, the relationship with past experience (memory), and the transfer of information among different areas of the brain participating to the elaboration of the thought. Almost all brain illnesses or even simple defaults can be related to a corruption of the basic system which manage information in the brain. The main actors in transferring and managing information are the synapses, and then the understanding of the brain information processing cannot disregard the full understanding of the synaptic functionality. In the present chapter, by using as example the most common type of the brain synapse (the glutamatergic synapse), we will present the basic mechanism of synaptic transmission stressing some of the most relevant mechanisms which regulate the transfer and management of information.

Sempre più ricerche evidenziano come il microbiota, cioè l’insieme dei microrganismi che popolano il nostro intestino, sia fondamentale per la salute: la flora batterica dell’intestino (chiamato non a caso “il secondo cervello”) ha infatti funzione protettiva, aiuta il sistema immunitario e, a quanto sembra, influenza il nostro umore. Questo libro, realizzato in collaborazione con la Fondazione Danone, raccoglie le testimonianze di otto qualificati esperti, ognuno dei quali analizza e spiega un aspetto di questo meraviglioso meccanismo, raccontando in un linguaggio semplice e accessibile le basi, ma anche le scoperte più recenti: dall’importanza del microbiota nei primi tre anni di vita del bambino al rapporto fra intestino e attività fisica, passando ovviamente dalla tavola e dagli alimenti funzionali del presente e del futuro. Dalla teoria alla pratica, il libro contiene anche un menu di ricette, pensato per avviare un “ciclo detox” di una settimana, ideato specificatamente per rinforzare la flora batterica.
