Problematic Wildlife II

In a world where habitats are constantly changing and the impact of anthropization on the environment is increasingly intense, interactions between human and wildlife are becoming more and more complex. Some species pose problems for human activities while many others need to be helped in order to continue to exist. This book follows the first volume called 'Problematic Wildlife', edited by F.M. Angelici and published by Springer in 2016, which has had considerable success with readers and critics. The volume includes 21 chapters divided into 7 parts devoted specific topics which are approached in a multidisciplinary way. There are both review chapters and specific cases, always bearing in mind the interest for an international audience. The book is useful both for scientists, wildlife specialists, conservationists, zoologists, ecologists, university students, nature managers, and for those who live in contact with wildlife and its problems, such as farmers, shepherds, hunters, urban planners, and staff of parks and nature reserves. Its ultimate goal is to offer scientific and pragmatic approaches to manage each categories of problematic species.

What we have learned from animals

Did you know that we can learn things about ourselves (humans) and our behaviour without directly studying ourselves? Scientists have for years studied all kinds of animals, to gain a better insight into their strategies for survival, both alone and together. And we are now finding out that these studies can teach us a lot about us and our world – from ecosystem functioning, to behaviour, to health. This Collection examines what we have learned from animals, ranging from microscopic invertebrates to fish and mammals. We look in particular at what different animals can teach us about human behaviour, about how life has evolved and its diversity, and about how the ecosystem on our planet functions. We hope you enjoy reading about all the fascinating things we can learn from the animals we share out planet with!

As for other large carnivores in Europe, the brown bear shows a trend of recovering under different management scenarios. However, this recovery comes with specific biological and conservation requirements at individual and population levels often followed by conflicts in a highly humanized continent. To foresee conflicts with humans and to facilitate decisionmaking, spatially-explicit research is required to identify potential habitats and the connectivity of fragmented bear populations. First, we conducted multiscale modeling based on scale-integrated resource selection functions (SRSFs) to identify drivers shaping the spaceuse of three bear populations/demographic units (Trentino-Swiss, p...

Perimetry Update 1998/1999

The topics presented at the XIIIth Symposium embraced all aspects of perimetric science. A total of ten sessions were held and covered: fundamentals of perimetry, visual psychophysics, new perimetric techniques, new algorithms for estimating threshold, perimetric variability, color perimetry, optic nerve head imaging, and visual field investigation in glaucoma and in retinal and neurological disorders. The new perimetric techniques included frequency doubling technology, flicker perimetry and pupil perimetry. The new algorithms included the Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm (SITA) and Tendency Orientated Perimetry (TOP). The session on perimetric variability addressed some of the issue...
