Presents the results of a two-year study that analyzes how patient safety practices are being adopted by U.S. health care providers, examines hospital experiences with a patient safety culture survey, and assesses patient safety outcomes trends. In case studies of four U.S. communities, researchers collected information on the dynamics of local patient safety activities and on adoption of safe practices by hospitals.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is carrying out its congressional mandate to establish a patient-safety research and development initiative to help health care providers reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. Evaluation of the Patient Safety Improvement Corps
The Patient Safety Improvement Corps (PSIC), part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ's) patient safety initiative, is a program of three one-week sessions (didactic lessons, homework, and a team project) operated collaboratively by the AHRQ and the Veterans' Affairs (VA) National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS). Evaluates the per capita methodology for profiling physicians -- a method which measures a patient's resource use over a fixed period of time and attributes that resource use to physicians -- in order to assist with the development of a physician feedback approach. It examines: (1) the extent to which physicians in selected specialties show stable practice patterns and how beneficiary utilization of services varies by physician resource use level; (2) factors to consider in developing feedback reports on physicians' performance, incl. per capita resource use; and (3) the extent to which feedback reports may influence physician behavior.
