A graduate of Cooper Union in New York, Whitfield Lovell has been widely exhibited worldwide. His work is in such museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Museum of American Art, and the Seattle Art Museum. Inspired by his own background, global travels and research, and large collections of found objects and photographs of African Americans, Lovell creates tableaux and full-scale, site-specific installations, melding two-dimensional charcoal drawings with the three-dimensional objects. His works reveal African American spirituality and recall the memories and the heritage that define who African Americans are.

Selling the Serengeti

Situating safari tourism within the discourses and practices of development, Selling the Serengeti examines the relationship between the Maasai people of northern Tanzania and the extraordinary influence of foreign-owned ecotourism and big-game-hunting companies. It looks at two major discourses and policies surrounding biodiversity conservation, the championing of community-based conservation and the neoliberal focus on private investment in tourism, and their profound effect on Maasai culture and livelihoods. This ethnographic study explores how these changing social and economic relationships and forces remake the terms through which state institutions and local people engage with foreign...

Based on a legal history of international biodiversity treaties from the late nineteenth century to the present, Rachelle Adam argues that todayÕs biodiversity crisis is rooted in European colonial history, especially in the conservation treaties that the colonial powers (and their non-governmental counterparts) negotiated to protect AfricaÕs big-game animals. Reflecting on the colonial pastÑparticularly on efforts to manage the commerce in elephant ivoryÑAdam sheds light on why more recent attempts to arrest the decline in biodiversity by way of international agreement have failed. This volume will spur a rethinking of such agreements and trigger a search for alternatives outside of existing international structures.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. Presenting rigorous and original research, this volume offers key insights into the historical, cultural, social, economic and political forces at play in the creation of world-class ICT innovations in Kenya. Following the arrival of fiber-optic cables in 2009, Digital Kenya examines why the initial entrepreneurial spirit and digital revolution has begun to falter despite support from motivated entrepreneurs, international investors, policy experts and others. Written by engaged scholars and professionals in the field, the book offers 15 eye-opening chapters and 14 one-on-one conversations with entrepreneurs and investors to ask why establishing ICT start-ups on a continental and global scale remains a challenge on the “Silicon Savannah”. The authors present evidence-based recommendations to help Kenya to continue producing globally impactful ICT innovations that improve the lives of those still waiting on the side-lines, and to inspire other nations to do the same.

State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2016

The unique cultures of minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide – spanning a wide variety of customs and practices – are under threat. This year’s edition of State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples highlights the impact of land dispossession, forced assimilation and other forms of discrimination on the most fundamental aspects of their identity, including language, art, traditional knowledge and spirituality. But while the effects of this attrition can be devastating, minority and indigenous cultures have also been critical in strengthening communities and providing activists with a platform to fight for their rights. As this volume illustrates, ensuring that the cultural freedoms of minorities and indigenous peoples are protected is essential if their other rights are also to be respected.

Faith for Finances

God is not poverty-stricken, and He does not produce poverty-stricken children. The Bible abounds with promises that God will open the windows of heaven, satisfy us, shower down blessing on us, provide for us, replenish us, and prosper us. Yet, despite all these powerful promises, Christians don't always know how to receive His provision. Now, from the inspirational writings of E. W. Kenyon and Don Gossett comes a book to help you excellently receive all that God has for you by daring to stand on the promises for financial blessing and success found in God's Word. You will understand... How to stop worrying about finances How to get a better job How to become a joyful giver How to pray and get results How confession leads to possession How God can work miracles in your life When you were born again, you were not born to be defeated. You were born to be a conqueror. Declare the truth of Romans 8:37: "I am more than a conqueror through Christ!" Think victory, not defeat. Speak triumphant words, not words of failure. Act like a conqueror, for in Christ, you are!
