Bernard Shaw and the Making of Modern Ireland
This book is an anthology focused on Shaw’s efforts, literary and political, that worked toward a modernizing Ireland. Following Declan Kiberd’s Foreword and the editor’s Introduction, the contributing chapters, in their order of appearance, are from President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, Anthony Roche, David Clare, Elizabeth Mannion, Nelson O’Ceallaigh Ritschel, Aisling Smith, Susanne Colleary, Audrey McNamara, Aileen R. Ruane, Peter Gahan, and Gustavo A. Rodriguez Martin. The essays establish that Shaw’s Irishness was inherent and manifested itself in his work, demonstrating that Ireland was a recurring feature in his considerations. Locating Shaw within the march towards modernizing Ireland furthers the recent efforts to secure Shaw’s place within the Irish spheres of literature and politics.

DDR-Sozialismus in der Karibik?
Beinahe 30 Jahre lang glänzte die »Völkerfreundschaft« zwischen Kuba und der DDR im öffentlichen Diskurs der SED als Musterbeispiel ihres proletarischen Internationalismus. Doch die Rhetorik täuscht: Besonders in den Anfangsjahren der bilateralen Beziehungen nahmen die deutschen Kader ihre kubanischen »Genossen« in der Karibik als notorische Querschläger wahr, die mit ihrem Aufbegehren gegen den ideologischen Suprematieanspruch des Kremls die Stabilität des Ostblocks gefährdeten. Anhand bislang unveröffentlichten Quellenmaterials aus deutschen und kubanischen Archiven veranschaulicht Antonia Bihlmayer die Bemühungen der Regierung Walter Ulbrichts, die widerspenstigen Sozialisten in der Karibik auf Moskau auszurichten. Sie analysiert die Charakteristika dieser sozialistischen Zivilisierungsmission und beschreibt zugleich, wie sich diese beiden sozialistischen Enklaven ab Mitte der 1970er Jahre schließlich zu gleichwertigen »Juniorpartnern« der Sowjetunion entwickelten.

Anthropological Abstracts (AA) is a reference journal published once a year in print, but also under www.anthropology-online.de and announces - in English language - most publications in the field of cultural/social anthropology published in the German language area (Austria, Germany, Switzerland). Since many of these publications have been written in German, and most German publications are not included in the major English language abstracting services, Anthropological Abstracts offers a convenient source of information for anthropologists and social scientists in general who do not read German, to become aware of anthropological research and publications in German-speaking countries. Included are journal articles, monographs, anthologies, exhibition catalogs, yearbooks, etc. Most abstracts are authored by the editor, others are specified accordingly.
