Regional Science in Developing Countries
Developing countries are suffering from the multiple and overlapping problems of poverty, malnutrition, excessive population growth and also the increased environmental pollution due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, particularly in the existing urban centres. The migration from rural areas of agricultural population to urban areas is making this situation more problematic. The lack of established institutions leads to the failure of public policy no matter how efficiently it is formulated. The book discusses the major regional developmental problems in poor countries, covering economic, social and environmental problems. It deals with case-studies for a set of individual countries, and discusses their unique problems, investigating how the established methods of regional science can be used to solve some of these problems.
Communism
A young naval officer takes on the task of understanding the spread of Communism. He starts with the seminal work of Marx, the Communist Manifesto, and continues reading and analyzing world history in the twentieth century. The lives of Lenin and Stalin are gone into, followed by the struggle on the part of the Communists and the Fascists over Spain during its civil war, 1936-1939. In China, the conflict between Mao and Chiang Kai-shek is explained. It ends with Mao victorious and Chiang moving to Taiwan with his army. On the death of Mao, Deng Xiaoping returns to the scene and steers China away from Communism toward a form of market economy. In our hemisphere, four movements are analyzed, that of Castro in Cuba, Ortega in Nicaragua, Chavez in Venezuela and Allende in Chile. With the exception of Castro's stated intention of forming a Communistic government, Ortega, Chavez and Allende can be thought of mixing Communism with Socialism in creating their governments. The young naval officer does not escape romantic entanglements. He experiences the attractions of several women before finding a woman who is interested in him for marriage and starting a family.
Economic Impact of the Withdrawal of the GSP on Singapore
This study is part of an ESCAP/UNCTAD/UNDP regional project. The objectives for the Singapore case-study include identifying the products affected by the GSP withdrawal and assessing how Singapore can regain its competitiveness, which may involve the restructuring of such industries and, if need be, also relocation. First, the economic impact of the pre-graduation country scenario is analysed in terms of composition and structure of GSP exports, GSP export growth, and market shares. This covers overall GSP performance as well as GSP exports to the United States. This is followed by an analysis of the post-graduation country scenario, that is, the economic impact after the withdrawal of the U.S. GSP in 1989. The policy implications and options at both the government and business sector levels are assessed and the conclusions of the study, which may be useful to other target countries, are also provided.

Landownership and Residential Land Use in Urban Economies
A basic model of residential land use is proposed, in which a group of city residents is assumed to jointly own a circular area of land extending from the central business district. This basic model then allows the existence and uniqueness of the land-use equilibrium to be shown, as well as the effects of land ownership, household income, and population. By extending this model to an arbitrary subset of the city land and by introducing a crowding externalities variable, the effects of land ownership on the land-use equilibrium are examined using comparative statistics.
