European representations of Māori by colonial artists is a topic that has been well examined , however this dissertation investigates this subject from a Māori tribal perspective. A kaupapa Māori paradigm applying whakapapa and Māori epistemology is utilised to explain the link between ancestors and taonga. There follows discussion detailing the role of portraiture in replacing traditional taonga in Māori cultural practices adaption to the impact of missionisation and colonisation. The focus of this investigation is the work of artist Wilhelm Dittmer by examining the time he spent at Tokaaru while staying amoungst Ngāti Tūwharetoa and the portraits he painted of Ngāti Tūwharetoa anc...

Immersive Analytics is a new research initiative that aims to remove barriers between people, their data and the tools they use for analysis and decision making. Here the aims of immersive analytics research are clarified, its opportunities and historical context, as well as providing a broad research agenda for the field. In addition, it is reviewed how the term immersion has been used to refer to both technological and psychological immersion, both of which are central to immersive analytics research.

The Waitangi Tribunal

The Waitangi Tribunal sits at the heart of the Treaty settlement process, with a unique remit to investigate claims and recommend settlements. But although the claims process has been hugely controversial, little has been written about the Tribunal itself. These essays, by leading academics, lawyers and researchers, successfully fill that gap, examining the Tribunal’s role in reshaping Māori identity and society, the Tribunal’s future mission, and its contribution to ideas of justice and reparation. This perceptive analysis of a key institution is vital reading for anyone seeking to understand Treaty settlements. Te Hāhi Mihinare | The Māori Anglican Church

The arrival of the Anglican Church with its claims to religious power was soon followed by British imperial claims to temporal power. Political, legal, economic and social institutions were designed to be the bastions of control across the British Empire. However, they were also places of contestation and engagement at a local and national level, and this was true of New Zealand. Māori culture was constantly capable of adaptation in the face of changing contexts. This ground-breaking book explores the emergence of Te Hāhi Mihinare – the Māori Anglican Church. Anglicanism, brought to New Zealand by English missionaries in 1814, was made widely known by Māori evangelists, as iwi adapted ...

The International Journal of Therapeutic Jurisprudence

  • Categories: Law

This is the inaugural issue of the International Journal of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, a journal produced by Arizona Summit Law Review. It provides a collection of student, academic, and practitioner articles on the topic of Therapeutic Jurisprudence ("TJ"). Therapeutic Jurisprudence is a way of looking at "law as therapy" or "therapy through law." It grew out of mental health law and the scholarly writings of Professor David Wexler in the late 1980's. Its applications have expanded into all areas of the law since then. This journal attempts to capture just of few of the many applications of TJ. This Journal is somewhat of a hybrid between a typical law review journal and a journal on social sciences. Its mission is to publish practical material that engages and influences both the legal and scientific communities. Specifically this issue presents fifteen articles ranging from practitioners' use of TJ principles, TJ applications in criminal sentencing and restoration, to mainstream applications of TJ and procedural justice.
