The International Journal of Therapeutic Jurisprudence

  • Categories: Law

This is the inaugural issue of the International Journal of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, a journal produced by Arizona Summit Law Review. It provides a collection of student, academic, and practitioner articles on the topic of Therapeutic Jurisprudence ("TJ"). Therapeutic Jurisprudence is a way of looking at "law as therapy" or "therapy through law." It grew out of mental health law and the scholarly writings of Professor David Wexler in the late 1980's. Its applications have expanded into all areas of the law since then. This journal attempts to capture just of few of the many applications of TJ. This Journal is somewhat of a hybrid between a typical law review journal and a journal on social sciences. Its mission is to publish practical material that engages and influences both the legal and scientific communities. Specifically this issue presents fifteen articles ranging from practitioners' use of TJ principles, TJ applications in criminal sentencing and restoration, to mainstream applications of TJ and procedural justice.

The Declaration in Script and Print

Perhaps the single most important founding document of the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence became both a work of art and a mass-market commodity during the nineteenth century. In this book, graphic arts historian John Bidwell traces the fascinating history of Declaration prints and broadsides and reveals the American public’s changing attitudes toward this iconic text. The new and improved intaglio, letterpress, and lithographic printing technologies of the nineteenth century led to increasingly elaborate reproductions of the Declaration. Some were touted as precious relics; others were aimed at the bottom of the market. Rival publishers claimed to have produced t...

Great Crossings

In Great Crossings: Indians, Settlers, and Slaves in the Age of Jackson, prize-winning historian Christina Snyder reinterprets the history of Jacksonian America. Most often, this drama focuses on whites who turned west to conquer a continent, extending "liberty" as they went. Great Crossings also includes Native Americans from across the continent seeking new ways to assert anciently-held rights and people of African descent who challenged the United States to live up to its ideals. These diverse groups met in an experimental community in central Kentucky called Great Crossings, home to the first federal Indian school and a famous interracial family. Great Crossings embodied monumental chang...

"The Study Guide for the Fundamentals of Health Information Management, 2nd edition, is a lovely complement to the textbook readings. Using the study guide allows for an overview of key aspects of each chapter and provides a quick review in the form of multiple choice, short answer, and true/false questions. Case studies have been included and allow the student to go beyond the basic knowledge/understanding level and apply their critical thinking and analysis skills. Instructors can use the study guide to direct class discussion on specific topics of interest." Kelly Abrams, Ph.D. Candidate, CHIM VP, Canadian College of Health Information Management

Self-evident Truths

From a distinguished historian, a detailed and compelling examination of how the early Republic struggled with the idea that "all men are created equal" How did Americans in the generations following the Declaration of Independence translate its lofty ideals into practice? In this broadly synthetic work, distinguished historian Richard Brown shows that despite its founding statement that "all men are created equal," the early Republic struggled with every form of social inequality. While people paid homage to the ideal of equal rights, this ideal came up against entrenched social and political practices and beliefs. Brown illustrates how the ideal was tested in struggles over race and ethnicity, religious freedom, gender and social class, voting rights and citizenship. He shows how high principles fared in criminal trials and divorce cases when minorities, women, and people from different social classes faced judgment. This book offers a much-needed exploration of the ways revolutionary political ideas penetrated popular thinking and everyday practice.
