Envisioning Others offers a multidisciplinary view of the relationship between race and visual culture in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world, from the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal to colonial Peru and Colombia, post-Independence Mexico, and the pre-Emancipation United States. Contributed by specialists in Latin American and Iberian art history, literature, history, and cultural studies, its ten chapters take a transnational view of what ‘race’ meant, and how visual culture supported and shaped this meaning, within the Ibero-American sphere from the late Middle Ages to the modern era. Case studies and regionally-focused essays are balanced by historiographical and theoretical offerings for a fresh perspective that challenges the reader to discern broad intersections of race, color, and the visual throughout the Iberian world. Contributors are Beatriz Balanta, Charlene Villaseñor Black, Larissa Brewer-García, Ananda Cohen Suarez, Elisa Foster, Grace Harpster, Ilona Katzew, Matilde Mateo, Mey-Yen Moriuchi, and Erin Kathleen Rowe.

Some books are definitive, and some lead to other projects which turn out to be definitive--if we accept that anything is ever final, particularly in the study and interpretation of works of art. Nonetheless, in the attempt to sketch out an artist's career, his points of reference and his convictions, there are certain steps we have to take. This book by Teresa Macià on the Catalan, French and American painter, Pierre Daura, is the first step in the analysis of this artist, carried out by a person who has become the foremost authority on his work. This is not only because of her research, which is always necessary, but also because of her personal involvement in the rediscovery and publicizing of the artist, in close collaboration with Martha Daura, the painter's daughter. -- Pg.7.

The latest in the Georgia Museum of Art's series of publications on drawings from its permanent collection, "Tracing Vision" focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century works by a huge range of artists. Contemporary feminist artists Lenore Tawney and Nancy Grossman are represented alongside Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and Chuck Close is closely followed by American Scene artist Howard Cook and turn-of-the-century muralist Kenyon Cox. Carol Nathanson, who wrote by far the largest number of entries, also supplies a marvelous introductory essay that highlights the ties among this diverse selection of drawings and focuses on the importance of the medium throughout art history.
