Homosexuality is a cross-cutting challenge to Malawian society with theological, socio-cultural, economic, legal, political, and human rights implications. This book argues that the solution to the homosexuality debate in Malawi does not lie in either the criminalization or decriminalization of homosexuality; neither does it lie in homophobia nor heterophobia. However, the solution to the homosexuality debate lies in achieving a harmonious co-existence of both heterosexuals and homosexuals by practicing mutual tolerance. The book concludes by suggesting various activities to be taken by: The Government of Malawi; Gay Rights Activists; Religious Leaders; Traditional Leaders; and Malawian Society to ensure the aforementioned tolerance and understanding is encouraged.

Here is an important volume offering new insights into the generational transformation of Japanese hegemonic masculinity. Drawing on thirty-nine life-histories of three generations of sararīman (salaryman) each working, or having worked for large companies, this book is an in-depth study of Japanese salaryman masculinity, that is, the ‘hegemonic masculinity’ in Japan. Through Japanese salarymen’s own accounts of themselves, the author investigates the construction of their masculinity throughout their lives; childhood, adolescence, young adult experiences, as well as work and family life. While changes are reflected in the participants’ narratives, little research has been done to link these changes in the performance of masculinity to the dramatic economic and social changes over the last century.

"Men's Friendships" offers an analysis of the differences within each of the genders and the social forces that shape the ways friendship is organized. Through varying perspectives the contributors show that a variation exists within as well as between the genders. They focus on the diversity in men's friendships, and how men develop and maintain friendships with other men and with women. The first section focuses on philosophical and historical questions. Part II illustrates the strong connection between social structure and men's friendships; and the last series of chapters considers cultural diversity. -- From publisher's description.
