Letters, bills and receipts, 11 August 1819 - 14 June 1887, of the Whitaker family who lived in and near the vicinity of Camden (Kershaw County, South Carolina); papers chiefly relate to Thomas Whitaker ([1782?]1-1859) and his siblings during the antebellum period with several specimen letters from the American Civil War and later decades. Topics represented include financial transactions with factors in Charleston, family travels, health and outmigration to Alabama and Florida. Alabama locations referenced include "Portland Bend" [presumably Portland in Dallas County] and Brooklyn (Conecuh County, Alabama).
Adherence to regulatory limits for mycotoxins in agricultural commodities is important to safeguard consumers and to permit trade in affected commodities across international borders. Reliable estimates of mycotoxin concentrations are required to implement regulatory decisions on the suitability of lots of produce for consumption or trade. Effective schemes to test for mycotoxins depend not only upon sound analytical methods, but also on well designed and implemented sampling plans. This manual provides information to food analysts and regulatory officials on effective sampling plans to detect mycotoxins in food. The concepts of uncertainty and variability in mycotoxin test procedures are discussed as well as the importance of ensuring that samples are representative of the lot being sampled, and the consequences of a poorly designed sampling plan on the reliability of the measured levels of mycotoxins, possibly resulting in legal disputes and barriers to trade.
During this period, Whitaker was an employee at a nearby textile mill, where he oiled looms. His comments on the workplace refer to a strike that occurred for higher wages, his own wages, and shutdown days at the mill. The later portion of the diary consists primarily of brief entries. During this time he was attending school and helping with the yearly harvest. Written on the concluding pages are essays on music and the value of education, especially to farmers as a "class," the class in which he placed himself. Biannual reflections on his spiritual growth appear on his birthday and the new year.

Fundamental techniques of mathematical modeling of processes essential to the food industry are explained in this text. Instead of concentrating on detailed theoretical analysis and mathematical derivations, important mathematical prerequisites are presented in summary tables. Readers' attention is focused on understanding modeling techniques, rather than the finer mathematical points. Topics covered include modeling of transport phenomena, kinetic processes, and food engineering operations. Statistical process analysis and quality control as applied to the food industry are also discussed. The book's main feature is the large number of worked examples presented throughout. Included are examples from almost every conceivable food process, most of which are based on real data given in the many references. Each example is followed by a clear, step- by-step worked solution.
