Through 67 interviews and 59 colour photographs, It's a Living reveals the energy and struggle of the world of work in Vietnam today. A goldfish peddler installing aquariums, a business school graduate selling shoes on the sidewalk, a college student running an extensive multi-level sales network, and a girl doing promotions but intent on moving into management, are just a few of the people profiled. Based on frank and freewheeling interviews conducted by students, the book engages a broad range of Vietnamese, both living in Vietnam and abroad, on their feelings about work, life and getting ahead. By providing a ground-level view of the texture of daily working life in the midst of rapid and unsettling change, the book reveals Vietnam today as a place where ordinary people are leveraging whatever assets they have, not just to survive, but to make a better life for themselves, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Vietnam and the World
Vietnam and the World is a comprehensive book on Vietnam's international relations since 1975. It is also a study on the development of Marxist-Leninist doctrine in Vietnam. With its special reference to foreign policy, the book examines how formalist Marxist-Leninist rhetoric penetrated traditional pragmatically oriented Vietnamese thinking. By using previously unexploited Vietnamese material, the author pinpoints the development of Vietnamese doctrine vis-a-vis pragmatism and formalism and analyzes the line pursued by Vietnam during the radical changes in international relation between 1975 and 1993.

Facing the Future, Reviving the Past
A Study of Social Change in a Northern Vietnamese Village is based on anthropological fieldwork between 1992 and 1996 in a small Red River delta village. It treats the history of the village since its foundation in the mid-seventeenth century, based on existing French and Vietnamese archival materials. At the same time, the book discusses the essentialist character of the Vietnamese village community. Special interest is devoted to internal politics within the village which enable powerful lineages and groups to (re)gain political and social power within the village. The recent revival of religious activities as a result of the renovation policy is taken into consideration. Since Vietnamese society is changing at a very fast pace, a longitudinal study of this nature provides the reader with a firsthand account of the interplay between the reform under a Marxist regime and local village society.
Escape from Mao's Terror
From 1966 to 1976, the so-called Cultural Revolution in China throws an entire nation into violent and catastrophic turmoil. Millions are displaced, tortured, or executed under Mao Zedong's ruthless regime. Suffering persecution for his religious beliefs and family connections abroad, a young doctor named Qing Zeng is forced to flee. He makes two failed attempts at escape to Hong Kong. Finally, at the peak of the Cultural Revolution, and at the risk of losing his life, he eventually makes a heart-pounding escape alone to North Vietnam and manages to survive in the rural countryside for seven long years. But ultimately, he is forcibly repatriated back to China. is the moving story of one man's struggle to escape the place he used to call home, and finally find freedom. The story provides living witness to the history of that time.
