Tourism Research and Landscape Interpretation
The central task of tourism research is to advocate for sustainability. In order to do justice to the various components relating to tourism, such as aspects of the natural and cultural landscape as well as the economic, sociocultural and political situation, an integrative approach is necessary. The “landscape” is the foundation of tourism. Landscapes have their own value, a value that visitors and even locals are often not conscious of. “Landscape interpretation” and “heritage interpretation” attempt to remedy this defi cit by defi ning, vividly presenting and “staging” the essential aspects of a landscape. This makes it possible to enhance awareness of the value of a landscape and its need to be protected, thereby achieving a positive change in the behaviour of visitors. The present volume introduces various initiatives, which illustrate the importance of landscape interpretation for tourism research.
Die Landschaft interpretieren: Interdisziplinäre Ansätze
There is no generally valid, recognised definition of what landscape actually is. On the basis of its relatedness to the environment, to aesthetics, territory, society, politics, economics, geography, planning, ethnology and philosophy, the concept of landscape is considered to be a "composite" notion shaped by a thousand years of Central European ideas and of literary and art history. In other words, the very term "landscape" is ambiguous and it is used in different ways both in the scholarly world and everyday speech. The aim of this volume is to present various possible approaches to the phenomenon of "landscape". Far from laying any claim to be exhaustive or comprehensive we have simply tried to do justice to the overarching interdisciplinary approach of the Zentrum für Landschaftsinterpretation und Tourismus (ZELT: Centre for Landscape Interpretation and Tourism) by singling out and addressing individual instances of this fascinating multifaceted phenomenon.

Natur erleben und Raum inszenieren
Sowohl private als auch öffentliche Akteure widmen sich der Inszenierung von Naturerlebnisangeboten. Die Vielfalt an thematischen Inhalten, didaktischen Konzepten und Zielgruppen sorgt dafür, dass der Begriff Naturerleben’ schillernd und facettenreich in Erscheinung tritt. So können Naturerscheinungen einerseits selbst zum Erlebnis werden, andererseits sind Natur und Landschaft Vehikel’ sowie Kulisse’ zahlreicher erlebnisorientierter Aktivitäten. Entsprechend variantenreich werden Räume in Szene gesetzt’. Die im vorliegenden Band eingenommenen Perspektiven reichen von der Öko- und Erlebnispädagogik über die Freiraumplanung bis hin zur Tourismusförderung. Gleichwohl eint die vorgestellten Projekte und Initiativen die Erkenntnis, dass als naturfern’ empfundene Lebensbedingungen bei vielen Menschen das Bedürfnis nach Natur erleben’ sowohl im Alltag als auch im Gegenalltag auslösen.
